Choi Cheolhan (left) vs. Lee Taehyun (right)

Choi who already led the series with 2-0 played as white in the third game, while Lee Taehyun (3 dan) played black. The game was interesting with both players showing fighting spirit. There's a nice life and death starting at black 101 which Choi handled well. Lee Taehyun resigned at move 154 thus giving the title to Choi with a perfect 3-0 score.

Here is the game record:

Umezawa Yukari Tried to Reclaim Female Kisei

Umezawa Yukari (5 dan), one of the most well known Japanese pro, is back for another title match. After a 2-0 loss to Xie Yimin in previous Female Kisei, she won the main tournament and challenge Xie Yimin, trying to reclaim her throne.

Umezawa Yukari

At the final game, Umezawa met Yoshida Mika (8 dan) who is the top female player of Kansai Kiin. The game opened with a fierce fight started at the left side of the board (which actually is a typical game for Umezawa Yukari).

Yoshida Mika had the lead for most part of the game, however she blew her victory away by playing the dangerous black 149. That move put them in a ko fight and Umezawa gladly sacrificed 5 stones to capture black's group at the left side. After the exchange, the game was easy for white and Umezawa won by 3.5 points.

Yoshida Mika

The first title match game between Xie Yimin and Umezawa Yukari was actually played on January 27, but it'll be broadcasted later in February 9.

Here is the game record:
Umezawa Yukari (white) vs. Yoshida Mika (black). Result: W+3.5

BC Cad Cup Preliminary's Semi-Final

The semi-final of the 3rd BC Card Cup shows a lot of amateur won over the pros and one person who already claimed a seat at the main tournament.

Round 2 starts!

It was Song Taekon (9 dan) of Korea who won the first seat at the main tournament. He beat Kim Jiin ama at the final. Interesting is, the fact that they played their final game at the same day of their semi-finals. Kim Jiin just beat Lee Qincheng (1 dan) of China while Kim Jiseok beat Kim Joonyong (5 dan) of Korea earlier that day.

With Kim Jiin going down, there are 7 amateurs left at the final, including Min Sangyoun who beat Hane Naoki of Japan and Mok Jinseok of Korea at the 15th Samsung Cup.

Seven female players made it to the final. Wang Xiangyun (2 dan) is the only non Korean between the 7. She will play Lee Taehyun (3 dan) of Korea at the Final. Lee Taehyun is a tough opponent. He is currently at the final of the 15th Chunwon where he is playing Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) in a best-of-5 title series.

There are 27 China player at the final (including Wang Xiangyun). Notably are Jiang Weijie Mingren, Gu Lingyi (5 dan), Tuo Jiaxi (3 dan), Piao Wenyao (5 dan), and Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan).

There are only 5 Japanese left at the final. They are Shuto Shun (7 dan), Oya Koichi (9 dan), Shida Tatsuya (3 dan), Ida Atsushi (2 dan), and Tsuruyama Atsushi (7 dan).

Only 2 Taiwan player made it to the final. They are Li Jinyoung (1 dan) and Lin Zhihan (9 dan).

Here are some games from the preliminary:

Choi Cheolhan Took the Lead

Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) is a step closer for his third Kuksu title. He won the third game of the 54th Kuksu title match and leads the series by 2-1.

Lee Changho (left) vs. Choi Cheolhan (right)

The game opening is quite unusual with white invaded with white 12 instead of finishing the joseki at the left side. Things became difficult for white when black cut white's group with black 149 and threatened the whole white group at the upper side. I personally think white 168 is the losing move. Perhaps white should solidly defense at F18 and avoid the dangerous ko fight.

Shinan Chunil Salt Won KB League

After a year of hard games and a roller coaster position during the leagues, Team Shinan Chunil Salt successfully won the 2010 Koean Baduk League.

The winning team

Korean Baduk League is a team tournament. Each team consists of 6 players, but only 5 were sent to play in every rounds. The tournament consists of 2 leagues before the final knock-down between 4 top teams started. The winning team gets 250,000,000 Won.

Shinan Chunil Salt's members are:
1. Lee Sedol (9 dan) Captain
2. Han Sanghoon (5 dan)
3. Lee Chunghyu (3 dan)
4. Lee Hobum (2 dan)
5. Park Siyeol (3 dan)
6. An Kukhyun (2 dan)

At the end of first league, Shinan Chunil Salt was placed 1st with 6-2 score, losing only to Yeongnam Ilbo and Chungkuk&Konkuk Milk. However, thing went downhill at the second league. This time, the team only scored 4-4 and dropped them to 5th place (non cumulative point). As a result, the team was dropped to 3rd at the final ranking.

The knock-down for this tournament is unusual. The team who was placed 1st at the final ranking is seeded to the final, the 2nd at the final ranking goes to semi-final, while the 3rd and 4th teams must start from the 1st round.

At the first round, Shinan Chunil Salt met Team Hite Jinro. After losing at the first game, they won the next 3 games and advanced to the semi-final.

Here is the game from the first round:
Lee Sedol (white) vs. Choi Cheolhan (black). Result: W+R

This year the final is not best of 3. Perhaps this change was done to lower the tournament cost.

Lee Sedol represented his team to hold the trophy.

Lee Sedol is the MVP of the tournament with an amazing 16-2 score. The second top scorer is Kang Yootaek with 13-3, followed by Kang Dongyun with 13-4.

Corner Tsumego

It's Monday again. Time to finish things that I left last weekend. But first, let's solve a tsumego.

Black just played at the marked stone (D2) which actually a mistake. The questions are:
1. How white can punish this?
2. What is the correct move for black?

Enjoy :)

Edit: I just found out that black can also avoid being killed in the corner. The variations in this tsumego (I believe) are very useful. Have fun in exloring them :)

Predictable Result

Round 1 of the 4th Daiwa Cup Grand Champion tournament bring no sensation with all expected-to-win players won by resignation. Here is the results:

Cho U (white) vs. Mannami Kana (black). Result:W+R
Black's formation at the left side is quite unusual. Mini-Chinese is more usual in this formation. Cho ended the game by killing black at the top right corner.

China-USA "Go Diplomacy"

President Obama has a dinner guest this evening: the President of China, Hu Jintao. It's just an informal dinner tonight, with the big state dinner and full diplomatic press later in the week.

The White House has apparently included some unusual guests in the official welcoming ceremony on Wednesday: members of the American Go Association.

Go is a 4,000 year old board game played with black and white pebbles. It's more popular in China than Angry Birds is to smart phone users in the US. You can read and hear more about it here:

http://www.scpr.org/news/2009/09/07/go-convention/

When President Obama visited China last year, he brought President Hu a present: an American-made Go board and glass bowls, plus Go stones donated by American Go professional (yes, there are some folks making a living by playing this game!) Feng Yun.

Barack Obama

Go enthusiasts say the game itself could serve as a metaphor and help US/Chinese relations. In Go, the best strategy utilizes the long view, with ongoing trades between players rather than all out victory as the goal.

Hu Jintao

It wouldn't be the first time odd sports were used to break the ice with China. Remember "ping pong diplomacy"? That was back in 1971 when an American table tennis team received an invitation to come to China to play.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/china/peopleevents/pande07.html

Those games led to a thawing of the relationship between the US and China and President Nixon's trip there in 1972.

Somehow though, "Go diplomacy" sounds more like a cheer than the clever name of a political strategy.

Mukai Chiaki Rechallenge Xie Yimin

Despite her lost at the final round at the 23rd Female Meijin league, Mukai Chiaki (4 dan) won her ticket to play Xie Yimin for the title Female Meijin.

Mukai Chiaki

Mukai picked 4 victories and 2 losses. At the final round of the league, Mukai lost by a slim 0.5 point to Mannami Nao (2 dan), but her higher placement at the previous league won her the ticket to the best-of-3 title series.

Mannami Nao

The date of the first game is still unknown, but it is expected to be in March. Xie has a very positive 7-2 record against Mukai. This will be their third title series between the two. Previously, Xie beat Mukai 3-0 in Female Honinbo title match and 2-0 in last year Female Meijin.

Final placement of the league:
1. Mukai Chiaki (4 dan) 4-2
2. Suzuki Ayumi (5 dan) 4-2
3. Yoshida Mika (8 dan) 4-2
4. Okuda Aya (2 dan) 4-2

Here is the answer for First Tsumego of the Year

Black's tenuki is correct here, because even if he played at T9, white can still live due to black's damezumari.

If black played 1 at diagram below, white will capture 3 stones and A-B will be miai for white.

Choi Evened the Score

After a heart breaking lost at the first game, Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) beat Lee Changho at the 54th Kuksu title match series.

Choi Cheolhan (left) vs. Lee Changho (right)

Lee who played black opened the game with a recently fashionable way to play the Low Chinese. Lee soon played for a big moyo at the upper board. Choi quickly entered the moyo with white 42 and saved the group without any problem. Choi then continued to destroy black's moyo at the center without many problems. Lee resigned at move 166.

First Blood at Kisei

The 35th Kisei entered the last day of the first game. Cho U (9 dan) played his sealed move, N6, and opened the last day.

Cho's sealed helped his group at the right side before he fix the group at the center by capturing one stone. I personally prefer to connect at H8 as black, because white's shape at the center is very poor and I'd like to keep it that way, but Iyama prefer to connect instead.

Iyama Yuta (facing the camera) vs. Cho U

Iyama started a ko fight at move 67. The ko fight is dangerous for both side. Iyama played carefully at move 99. He connected the ko instead of playing K2 which may lead to another dangerous ko fight. After the fight at the bottom board, I think Iyama had the control of the game. He played good moves like black 143 and black 95. He gave the final blow to Cho at move 201, showing Cho that move 200 is a blunder.

Iyama opened the title series with a great performance. The second game will be played at January 26-27.

I Am Legend

Moon Dowon has carved her name and put her portray at Jeongganjang Cup's Hall of Fame. She made a new record, 7 consecutive winning streaks, breaking previous record set by Song Ronghui of China who had 6 non-stop wins 2 years ago.

Moon Dowon met Suzuki Ayumi (5 dan) of Japan. The game was somewhat very simple, less intense compared to the previous game (Moon vs. Song Ronghui's game). Suzuki who played black opened the game with Mini Chinese fuseki and white answered with the watari at the right side. Suzuki Ayumi captured a corner early in the game, but the corner has a ko problem and Moon Dowon used it to attack black at the bottom board.

Suzuki Ayumi (left) vs. Moon Dowon (right)

Suzuki Ayumi's first problem came from her separated group at the bottom board. Although she successfully saved it at move 127, white became very thick at the left side and captured a big frame of moyo. The game quickly entered yose and white finished it without a problem.

Well, well, what can we say. Moon Dowon showed a great quality at the first stage of the competition. Korea still has all 5 members on board, while China is down to Tang Yi (2 dan) and their ace, Rui Naiwei (9 dan). Meanwhile, Japan hit the hard spot with only 1 member left, Yoshida Mika (8 dan). Will Moon Dowon continue her winning streak at the second stage? We'll find out the answer in March when the tournament continues.

Moon's friends are also happy for her. The person in left seems to be Park Jiyeon (2 dan) also Korea's team member at this year Jeongganjang.

Here is the game record:

The Strongest Taiwan Female Player

Hei Jiajia (a.k.a Joanne Missingham) shows an excellent performance in 2010. She was the runner-up at the international female tournament 1st Qionglong (or Bingsheng) cup, she scored 2-1 at the Asian New Star Cup (she was the only player who scored victory in Korea-Taiwan match), and also she won the qualification league of the 3rd Qisheng cup with a perfect 5-0 score. What more impressive is the fact that she was promoted to professional in January 2010 and already promoted to 2 dan at the end of the year (which usually is a sign of a strong newcomer).

Hei Jiajia at the 1st Bingsheng Cup

Recently, Taiwango website wrote that she'll be promoted to 5 dan due to her great performance at Bingsheng cup.

Ms. Missingham also started this year very well by winnning the preliminary of the 4th Qiwang Cup. She won the winner section, scored victories against Zhang Zhengping (2 dan), Lin Xiuping (3 dan), Xia Daming (5 dan), and Lin Yuxiang (3 dan). She'll play at the 8 players league along with Lin Zhihan Guoshou, Xiao Zhenghao Tianyuan, Lin Lixiang (3 dan), Lin Shuyang (6 dan), Zhou Junxun (9 dan) the other one who won the winner section, and two other players who win the loser section. The winner of the league will challenge Chen Shiyuan in a 7 games title match series.

You can see her final game here .

With all the achievements, I think we can say that she is the current #1 female player in Taiwan. Good luck to her for this year.

35th Kisei Starts

The 35th Kisei title match series starts! The first game started today and will continue tomorrow to find whose blood will be spilled first.

Cho U (left) and Iyama Yuta (right) at the opening ceremony.

The attention to this year's Kisei is quite big, because the rivalry between Cho U and Iyama Yuta continues here aftet the last time they played for Meijin title.

The first day ended at move 55 with Cho U did the sealing move. The question is, did Cho decide to help his stones at the right side, or capturing at H8, or played somewhere else? Let see the answer tomorrow.

Cho U handled the sealed move.

Here is the game record of day 1
Cho U (white) vs. Iyama Yuta (black).

The Moon Still Rises

Yes people, perhaps you can predict it from the title. Moon Dowon (2 dan) won again. Her sixth victory in a row. Today, she beat Song Ronghui (5 dan) of China.

Song Ronghui (left) vs. Moon Dowon (right). It seems that Song decided to grow her hair.

Moon who played black opened the game with Low Chinese fuseki. Song's answer is quite unusual for this fuseki, since usually white approaches the black stone at O3. Song started the fight with an invasion at L3. The sequence up to move 26 looks natural, but I personally like blaack's position better, because her lower right corner looks hard to enter, she can play D2 or D3 anytime to help her group at H4, and white's position at the upper board is still wide open.

Other players at the analysis room

I found black's combination from move 57-67 interesting. Moon Dowon put some weaknesses at white's shape at the upper board and exploits it well. Move 75 is quite intriguing. It seems that white can't cut the stones directly because of the weakness of L17 group and O17 group. If white tried to play L14, black will answer at M14, W M13, B N13, W M12, B O16 and her group is safe due to a damezumari. If white played M14, black will play L15, W K15, black connects with L14 and the battle will be difficult.

Another interesting combination starts at move 111 when black tried to save the corner. Move 122 is a difficult choice for white. I was thinking about the possibility of connecting at O14, but then there are possibilities where both white's groups at P10 and O15 are doomed. White went for S17 and a ko fight started. Black played the ko very well and the outcome reminds me of the latest game from 54th Kuksu title match. After the ko fight, the outcome is pretty much decided and Moon dowon finished it without a problem.

Thumbs up Ms. Moon Dowon. You steal the spotlight this year.

Moon will play the last game of the 1st stage tomorrow against one of Japanese member. I don't know who it will be, but I think it will be Yoshida Mika.

BC Card Cup Preliminary

The annual World BC Card Cup will start soon. The preliminary round will start at January 24. Who will pass the preliminary? Will Gu Li win again? We will find out soon.

Lee Changho Won Game 1

The 54th Kuksu title match series has started. The first game from the best of 5 was played at January 12. Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) challenges Lee Changho Kuksu for his title.

Lee Changho (right) who won the 11th Nongshim Cup for Korea.

The game started casually. Lee Changho (white) went for the corners while Choi Cheolhan created a moyo at the bottom board. Choi attacked Lee's group early in the game with move 75 and put white group to a ko fight to alive. Lee chose to abandon it and cut black's stones instead.

Choi Cheolhan

Choi Cheolhan's trouble started from the shoulder hit at move 82. Choi decided to come out instead of assuring his life with B12, because white's moyo will be too deep if he let white played D14. Lee Changho played a great sequence up to move 114 and then directly cut black's group with white 116. Lee then created a ko fight to determine the status of Choi's group, but then it became clear that white's group at the right side still had a big aji. Choi resigned without fought the ko.

The second game will be played at January 14.

Here is the game record:
Lee Changho (white) vs. Choi Cheolhan (black). Resut: W+R

High Five

It seems that Moon Dowon's time is not over yet. After 4 consecutive victories, she won the fifth game from Mukai Chiaki (4 dan) of Japan.

Mukai Chiaki (left) vs. Moon Dowon (right)

The game was interesting and it seems that Mukai Chiaki had the flow at the beginning of the game. Mukai sacrificed 3 stones to capture black's group at the center. However, Moon Dowon played a great end game and won the game there.

Moon Dowon has 5 victories in her pocket now. Will she win the sixth game?

Move 179 seems to be the winning move. It reduced white's territory a lot and black still had sente. In the end, Moon Dowon won the game by 1.5 points.
