Park Yeonghun Won Myeongin

The 39th Myeongin ended before reaching its fifth game. The result was decided after Park Yeonghun won the fourth game and won the title by 3-1 over Baek Hongsuk.

Park opened the series with a victory, but Baek won the second game and made the series event.

Park closed the whole series at the fourth game by winning the game after 228 moves by resignation. This is the second consecutive Myeongin for Park. It's an amazing achievement, since he has to played from the first round (eventhough he was the previous winner) and won his games all the way to the final.

Park Yeonghun Opened The 39th Myeongin

The final of the 39th Myeongin is a clash between 2 leading Korean player, Park Yeonghun (9 dan) and Baek Hongsuk (8 dan), in a best of 5 title series to decide who will be the 39th Myeongin. This year's Myeongin has a different format from the previous cycles. In this cycle, the players went from knockout preliminaries to a knockout main tournament where in the previous cycles, the players went from preliminaries to a main league (where players were split into 2 leagues).

Park is currently the Myeongin title holder (he won it last year from Weon Sungjin), however he doesn't get the privilege to directly defends his title. In fact, he played from round 1 all the way to the final. Meanwhile, Baek is a preliminary player. He was eliminated from the 38th Myeongin's league after scoring his only victory in a match against Lee Sedol.

Park Yeonghun played black in the first game, while Baek Hongsuk played white. The game started with a new pattern at the upper right corner. White 12 is new. Usually white will play hane at Q13 or S13. The outcome up to move 33 seems fair, maybe it is a new joseki. Baek then invaded black's area with white 34 and a fight started to spread at the bottom area.

Park played very well in the center and Baek soon became short on territories. White's last hope is to kill black's group at the upper board. Black played a tesuji at black 141 and 143. White 142 confuses me. I think there's nothing wrong with the direct N14 and it gives white more chance to kill black, but maybe I missed something (if you know the reason of white 142, please drop a comment. Thank you :D).

Black got a ko fight and executed the fight very well. White resigned after 173 moves. The second game will be played on November 24.

Cho Insun Advanced To Round 2

Cho Insun (7 dan, amateur) made a surprise at the 39th Myeongin (Korean equivalents for Meijin) by defeating Park Jeonggeun (4p) at the first round. Of course this is not "surprising" as Cho showed really good result against professionals. He won from Yun Junsang (8p) and Seo Gunwoo (5p) at the previous preliminary round. He also reached the final of the 16th LG Cup preliminary by defeating Kuwamoto Shinpei (6p), Dang Yifei (4p), and Ding Wei (9p) before lost to Mok Jinseok (9p) at the final.

I don't know whether the Myeongin is open to the amateur or were they invited by the sponsor/association, but it is a great thing that professional tournament is not that "strict" to amateur anymore since there are many amateurs who have the ability of pros, they just not that "lucky" to get the degree.

Weon Sungjin Won First Play Off

As reported in my previous post , there are 3 players tied for the second place at 38th Myeongin League B. They are Cho Hanseung (9 dan), Weon Sungjin (9 dan), and Kim Kiyoung (5 dan).

To decide who will join Park Yeonghun (9 dan) at the semi-final, two extra knock out games were added to the competition. The first game was played at August 30 between Cho Hanseung and Weon Sungjin.

The game was full of exchange with both players went for a big chunk of territory. Weon eventually won the game by resignation in 168 moves. Weon will play Ko Geuntae at September 5 to decide the second placer of League B.

Five Players Two Seats

The 38th Myeongin (Meijin) league is burning up. Five players are competing with only two seats left for the semi-final. One seat at League A and 1 seat at League B.

At League A, Kang Dongyun (9 dan) came out as the first placer with 4-1 score. His only lost came from new rising player, An Kukhyun (2 dan). An thus put himself at the final round player decision match of league A. He will play the winner between Lee Changho vs. Lee Sedol match. Lee Changho won that game and won the right to play An Kukhyun to decide the second placer of the league. An previously beat Lee Changho at the league. The game will be played at September 5.

At league B, Park Yeonghun (9 dan) came as the winner with 4-1. Park's only lost came from Cho Hanseung (9 dan). Cho is one of the last three players who are competing for semi-final seat. Cho along with Weon Sungjin (9 dan) and Kim Kiyoung (5 dan) has 3-2 record thus creating a three way tie. Cho Hanseung will play Weon Sungjin first at August 30. The winner will play Kim Kiyoung to determine who will join Park Yeonghun in the semi-final.

Kang Dongyun Won Myeongin League A

Kang Dongyun (9 dan) the talented Korean young player regain his chance to challenge for Myeongin title, after his unsuccessful challenge at this title 2 years ago.

Kang Dongyun has been declared as League A winner eventhough he hasn't played his fifth game. He is ranked number 1 with a perfect 4-0 score. Kang beat Lee Sedol to get this ticket to Myeongin semi-final.

Based on previous year's format, two players from each League A and B will play each other. Then the winner will play each other to determine the challenger.

Lee Changho In Danger

Lee Changho (Myeongin) started his Myeongin (Meijin) league badly with 2 consecutive loses to An Kukhyun (1 dan) and Kang Dongyun (9 dan).

However, he managed to revive with his victory over Baek Hongsuk. Not stopping there, he won another game 2 days ago from Kim Seongjae (4 dan) and keep his chance to win league A.

But this task seem to be very hard. There are three other players who have 2 victories are Lee Sedol, Kang Dongyun, and An Kukhyun.

Kang is leading with a perfect 2-0. He also still has 3 more games to be played. Meanwhile, Lee Changho is down to last game against Lee Sedol.

Baek Hongseok Stopped Lee Sedol's Magical Streak

Returning from his hiatus, Lee Sedol seems to be in a super form. He won the 2nd BC Card World Championsip (beating Chang Hao by 3-0), successfully entering 38th Myeongin league, and advancing to the second round of domestic tournaments. He is also in a 24 winning streak.

Lee Sedol got his first lost from the league game of 38th Myeongin from Baek Hongseok (7 dan) by a surprising 8.5 points margin.
