Half Point and Fourth Victory

What's the connection between half point and four victory? Well, simple. Park Jiyeon (2 dan) won her fourth games at the 4th GG Auction Cup in a half point game against Kang Hoon (9 dan).

I must say that this game is very entertaining. Lot of fight and exchange happened. Park who played white opened the game by taking 2 corners and a settled position in the right side. The first trade came when black let white captured three black stones at the upper left for white's invading stones.

White made a good use of her captured group. She played a smart combination from move 94 to 100.

I personally dislike Park's outfit today :(

Not only white who played a nice combination, black also did it. Black started with a probe at move 139. White responded it normally, then black played a fierce cut with 141. The sequence went until move 172 where black threatened to capture white's group.

Cho Hyeyeon and Park Jiyeon

After a hard 310 moves, Park won the game.

Witht her fourth victory, Park Jiyeon breaks her personal record at GG Auction Cup. Her best streak so far was three times at the 1st championship. Let see if she can break the 4 consecutive barrier for female players.

Young Promising Player at the 66th Honinbo Final

Cycle for the Honinbo league is close. The remaining 4 league players are almost complete.

The first player to enter the league is Seto Taiki (7 dan). He beat Kataoka Satoshi (9 dan) at the final of the last preliminary tournament to win his ticket. He beat Mimura Tomoyasu (9 dan) and Akiyama Jiro (8 dan) along the way.

The remaining three players are still unknown. Yamashiro Hiroshi who currently leads Kisei League B will face Cho Sonjin, ex Honinbo title holder, to determine who will get the league's seat.

At the other final, 2 famous name, Kono Rin (9 dan) will meet O Rissei (9 dan) to win one of the three league seats.

At the last final, Kobayashi Satoru (9 dan) will play a promising young player, Suzuki Shinji (2 dan). Suzuki turned professional in 2008 and was promoted to 2 dan early this year. Considering that male's titles take 2 years to finish, I assume that he never lost at the tournament. It'll be very impressive if he beat Kobayashi Satoru. It won't be easy though. However, Suzuki beat Cho Chikun at the second round. Hopefully this is enough moral booster he needs to beat Kobayashi.

Suzuki Shinji

Let's see whether we can start pointing him as Akira Toya or not.

Here is the game record between Suzuki Shinji and Cho Chikun at the second round of the last 66th Honinbo preliminary.

Two Players Leading Two Leagues

The 35th Kisei sen already reaching its third stage. So far, two players are leading in both League A and B.

In League A, 4 years Kisei title holder, Yamashita Keigo and Takao Shinji are leading with 2-0. Yamashita Keigo beat Kato Atsushi (8 dan) and Takao Shinji beat Yoda Norimoto (9 dan) last week. What interesting is, at the next
stage, both leader will meet. One of either Takao or Yamashita will take the lead with 3-0 at (expected to be) middle of August.

Yamashita Keigo

In League B, the young Meijin, Iyama Yuta and unpredictable player, Yamashiro Hiroshi (9 dan) share the temporary lead with 2-0. Iyama beat O Rissei (9 dan) and Yamashiro beat Hane Naoki in a big moyo game.
At the next stage, Iyama will play Hane Naoki who is in danger of demotion with 0-2 score and Yamashiro will meet Ryu Shikun who is at 1-1 score.

Yamashiro Hiroshi

Here is the game between Yamashita Keigo and Kato Atsushi. It was a fierce game where Yamashita (white) must play a do-or-die ko to destroy Kato's (black) big moyo.

Girls Fight

Let's take a look at a recently played game. This game came from the 23rd Female Meijin league. Black is Okuda Aya (2 dan) and white is Suzuki Ayumi (5 dan).

Okuda Aya

In this game, Okuda Aya who played black showed an excellent game. The game became complicated early when Suzuki Ayumi played a hit shoulder at move 10. Black struggled to come out and helped her group in the center.

Suzuki Ayumi

The game was decided when black cut white's stone at move 149. It seemed that white would win the capturing race. However, black played a tesuji with 179 to kill white. Black won the game by resignation.

Okuda Aya recently showed a very good result. She was the finalist of the 4th Daiwa Ladies Cup and notably, she beat Xie Yimin at the first round of the championship. She also started her Female Meijin league with a nice victory.

Here's the game record:

Park Jiyeon Won Again

Park Jiyeon (2 dan) the second player of Female team at the 4th GG Auction Cup bring her team one step closer to victory by defeating Jang Sooyong (9 dan) today.

The game was very territory oriented. Black set a big moyo early in the game. White invaded the moyo starting with the probe at move 34. At move 81, black played K1 to connect her group. I wonder why she didn't play M1. Perhaps I miss a variation where black will get caught if she played M1.

White's invading group survived from black's strong attack. In return, black got a big influence toward center and Park successfully convert the influence into territory. She won the game by 4.5 points.

Lee Changho vs. Gu Li, Again

After losing from Lee Changho yesterday, Gu Li managed to win his ticket to the final game of the 1st International Meijin Championship. He will, once again, play with Lee Changho to determine the champion.

In today's game, after a hard fight, Gu won from Iyama Yuta Meijin (Japan) by 4.5 points.

I'm wondering about move 145. I wonder if black can capture white without complication if he played atari from B9 instead.

The final game will be played at July 27. Let's see who will be crowned at the first International Meijin.

Lee Changho Won Day 1

The first game at the International Meijin Championship which is being held at China was decided. It was battle between China's Mingren vs. Korea's Myeongin. Yup! It was Gu Li vs. Lee Changho.

Left to right: Gu Li, Iyama Yuta, and Lee Changho

Gu Li who played white took the center at this game, while Lee got a big moyo at the upper side. The battle started at move 100 where Gu tried to save his stones. Gu Li showed a good fighthing skill, creating a ko fight, trying to survive. However, Lee was calm about this. It was later proved to be true that Gu can't win the fight. He resigned at move 209.

Female Team Is Leading

News from the 4th GG Auction Cup. The battle of gender is heating up. This time, the female team has the upper hand with 2 consecutive victories from Park Jiyeon (2 dan).

At the third game, Park beat Mr. Jeong Daesung (9 dan) by resignation. The game provides an interesting variation of Taisha joseki at the bottom left corner. Up to move 36, everything is usual. However at move 37, Park who played black extended once more instead of playing a one space jump (ikken-tobi) which is the joseki continuation.
White attacked severely and black went for a ko fight to help her group. A big trade was played early where black gave up her bottom right corner to capture white big group at the bottom left.

Park Jiyeon

The game ended at move 237. Black won the game by resignation.

However, black got bigger territory at the left side and won the game by 6.5 points.

China-Japan-Korea Master Tournament

A new trilateral tournament is going to be held from July 24-27. Three professionals who hold Master title from China, South Korea, and Japan will compete to decide who is the strongest Master.

The participants are: Gu Li Mingren (China), Lee Changho Myeongin (S. Korea), and Iyama Yuta Meijin (Japan).

Lee Changho

Iyama is the youngest contestant here. He hasn't performed very well against Lee and Gu. His personal record is 0-2 to Lee Changho (if I'm not mistaken. Correct me if I'm wrong.) and his record against Gu Li is 0-1.

Iyama Yuta

Meanwhile, fans seem to be waiting the game Lee Changho vs. Gu Li. They have met in many international games before, but I think the game will have many fireworks.

Gu Li

Here is the schedule:
July 24: Game day 1 between 2 players.
July 25: Day 1 loser meet the third player.
July 27: Winner of day 1 vs. winner of day 2 to decide the champion.

Kang Dongyun Won Myeongin League A

Kang Dongyun (9 dan) the talented Korean young player regain his chance to challenge for Myeongin title, after his unsuccessful challenge at this title 2 years ago.

Kang Dongyun

Kang Dongyun has been declared as League A winner eventhough he hasn't played his fifth game. He is ranked number 1 with a perfect 4-0 score. Kang beat Lee Sedol to get this ticket to Myeongin semi-final.

Based on previous year's format, two players from each League A and B will play each other. Then the winner will play each other to determine the challenger.

Here you can see Kang Dongyun vs. Lee Sedol's game:

Japan's Asian Games Representative

Here is the news from Nihon Kiin's English website:

Japan has announced its team for the 16th Asian Games, in which go will be an official competition sport for the first time. The games will be held from 12 to 27 November in Guangzhou, China, and there will be three go events – men’s and women’s team competitions and Pair Go.

Male players: Yamashita Keigo, Iyama Yuta, Takao Shinji, Yamada Kimio, Yuki Satoshi, Akiyama Jiro, Shuto Shun.

Female players: Umezawa Yukari, Yoshida Mika, Suzuki Ayumi, Mukai Chiaki, Osawa Narumi.

For the male team, I personally agree with the choices like Yamashita Keigo, Iyama Yuta, Takao Shinji, and Yuki Satoshi. However, the rest 3 players are kinda strange for me. I personally prefer Hane Naoki instead of Yamada Kimio. Yamada doesn't show good result at International tournament.

As for the female team, Yoshida Mika and Osawa Narumi also strange for me. I prefer Aoki Kikuyo and Koyama Terumi or Mannami Kana in the team. I also have a mixed feeling about Umezawa Yukari. Perhaps she'll play at the mixed pair with Takao Shinji. They were Japan's representative at the last Pair Go World Championship.

Mannami Kana Won Daiwa Ladies Cup

After a lot of struggle, Mannami Kana (4 dan) won the 4th Daiwa Ladies Cup. The tournament sponsored by Daiwa Security, is part of the Daiwa tournaments' series.

Mannami Kana

Mannami met Okuda Aya who made surprise by beating last year's champion, Xie Yimin at the first round.

Okuda Aya

The game started with a recently popular fuseki. I personally don't like the opening as I think a pincer is stronger here. A big fight started early. White's groups got separated and went into a difficult position. Okuda Aya showed a clever sequence to save her group at the upper right.

The game ended at move 296 with black's 6.5 points victory.

Team Senior Even the Score

After their defeat yesterday, senior team successfully even the score with a victory from Jeong Daesung (9 dan).

Jeong Daesung

Kim Sunmi who played black again, sacrificed her upper right corner to get moyo at the upper board. However, white played a clever probe at L15 and things turned awkward for black.

Kim Sunmi

Kim tried to cut Mr. Jeong's group but it turned out that she weakened her group at the upper board. Jeong Daesung later played brilliantly by putting a fight at the bottom right corner.

He sacrificed his earlier group at the upper side to win the ko fight. He was correct to sacrifice the group. Several moves later, he captured big black group at the bottom board.

Female Team Open the GG Auction Cup

The 4th GG Auction Cup started yesterday. As usual, 12 players from both Senior team and Female team will compete each other in a win and continue format.

This year, the female team open the tournament with a victory. Kim Sunmi (2 dan) won the first game from Na Jonghoon (6 dan) by a big 10.5 points margin.

Kim Sunmi

The game opened with white early approach at move 3. Black abandoned it and went for the last empty corner. The game went with black taking the right side, maintaining a big influence, while white got black's upper right corner. Black attacked white's weak group at the bottom right, while letting his center group in danger. However, black managed to connect her groups at move 123. Perhaps white should connect at D8 instead of nobi.

Na Jonghoon

The game ended at move 237 with Kim Sunmi's victory.

Zhou Junxun Won Donggang Cup

It seems that Zhou Junxun's aim to re-reclaim himself as Taiwan's #1 is going smooth, as he won the 10th Donggang Cup.

The single knock-out tournament which is sponsored by DongHe Gangtie(Steel) Co. and Taiwan Qiyuan Culture Foundation was started back in May and the final was played on July 11.

Zhou who played black in the final beat last year's champion, Chen Shiyuan. The game was complicated with a lot of fighting. I think black had the control of the game since the fight at the upper board. White resigned at move 167.

Zhou Junxun beat Peng Junde (1 dan), Zhang Yuanrong (1 dan), Lin Xiuping (3 dan), and Liu Yaowen (4 dan) to reach the final.

Here is the final's game record:

Korea Won China-Korea Tengen

The annual bilateral Tengen championship is back. This year, Park Junghwan Chunwon (Korean for Tengen) meet Chen Yaoye Tianyuan (Chinese for Tengen). This tournament is sponsored by Sports Korea newspaper and Xinmin Wanbo evening paper.

Chen Yaoye of China opened the first game by an early 165 moves resignation game. Chen who played black in the first game ended the game by cutting Park's group. The cut will lead to a favorable ko fight for black. I'm not sure whether white group can survive here or not, but perhaps Park didn't think he'll win the fight, so he resigned.

Here is the first game's record:

Park Junghwan even the game by winning the second game by 2.5 points. The game was quite territory oriented. Black claimed the right side, while white went for the left side and aimed for the upper board. There was a big trade at move 205. White sacrificed his 7 stones (about 12 points) for black's 5 stones. The trade was even I think. However, black eventually came out ahead after the trade.

The final third game was played since this morning. Park played as black again and repeat his previous victory. The game was, again, territory oriented. Both side quickly claimed right and left sides like in the second game. A semeai started in early game. White sacrificed his bottome right corner to save his big group. After the final ko fight, black won the game by 1.5 points.

Here is the third game's record:

With this victory, the score is 7-7 for both Korea and China in this event. Congratulations for Park Junghwan. I wonder if he will be promoted to 9 dan with this victory.

Lee Changho In Danger

Lee Changho (Myeongin) started his Myeongin (Meijin) league badly with 2 consecutive loses to An Kukhyun (1 dan) and Kang Dongyun (9 dan).

However, he managed to revive with his victory over Baek Hongsuk. Not stopping there, he won another game 2 days ago from Kim Seongjae (4 dan) and keep his chance to win league A.

Lee Changho

But this task seem to be very hard. There are three other players who have 2 victories are Lee Sedol, Kang Dongyun, and An Kukhyun.

Kang is leading with a perfect 2-0. He also still has 3 more games to be played. Meanwhile, Lee Changho is down to last game against Lee Sedol.

Professional Tsumego

This tsumego came from professional game. White to move and help his marked group.
Can you also name who is the black and white players?

HINT: This one came from one of the latest game.

Have fun :)
