Game Review: Unnecessary Fight

This is a game I recently played on WBaduk. This one game is a "rare" game where I thought over my moves. Usually I just dropped the stones. I was leading but I didn't realize that and continue the ko fight at the bottom left. Luckily my opponent didn't realize his chance to win the game and I won the game.

 I put the game on eidogo since the usual sgf viewer I use has problem with showing variations, so it's more comfortable tu put a game with many variations on eidogo. Check it out and drop some inputs guys :)

What is the difference between female's go and male's go? One of them is the violence of the game. Female's go usually involves more fight and more violence. If you are fighter on board or simply looking for an interesting game, looking at female tournaments is the answer.

Here I present you with 2 games from 2003. It was the title match of the 22nd Female Honinbo. The challenger was Yashiro Kumiko (5 dan) and the title holder was Kobayashi Izumi (5 dan). Yashiro won game, but Kobayashi Izumi showed her skill and won the next 3 games, defending her title. The interesting games came from game 2 and 3. Enjoy!

Fightback From the Past

The 66th Honinbo reached its climax after Hane Naoki won the sixth game and got his chance to fightback at the title series. Today, let's see a game from the past where Otake Hideo (9 dan) had the same position with Hane. Otake was down by 0-3 at the 38th Honinbo title series, but he showed his quality by winning the next 4 games from Cho Chikun (9 dan).


Otake Hideo (9 dan)

This is the fifth game of the series. This game was full of fighting fron the beginning to the end. Both players attacked each other strongly and ended after Otake read the fight at the upper board correctly. This game is a classic example of 1 eye vs. no eye semeai. Enjoy :)

WBaduk Free Lecture Game

If you're a Wbaduk user, you must be aware of the free lecture. Today I played the free lecture game against Cho Mikyung (3p) of Singapore. She gave me 9 stones and 0.5 moku and I won after a fight at the upper board. I think the handicap was wrong. Maybe less stones were more appropriate. Not sure though.

Fujisawa Rina First Official Victory

Surely that there are some burden being the granddaughter of the famous Fujisawa Shuko. Fujisawa Rina knows it best. Being the most famous new player, Rina seems to be always under the radar.

Rina made a rare move with black 11. The usual combination would be black 11 at M17 followed by white O16, black P18, R17, N18, O15, M16, N15, L16, P12. Kanda Ei's answer at white 12 is the only move. Black's position will be too promising if white played O18. Rina also showed a calm defense when her group is under fire. She played the correct escaping move, S7. It doesn't matter whether white played Q8 or Q9 next, since black's group will still get out of the hot water.

Cosmic Takemiya

Let's take a look at a game from 1990. It was from the 28th Judan title match game 2.

Black was Takemiya Masaki, challenger and white was Cho Chikun Judan. You can see an interesting opening where both players played L-Stars combination (I don't know whether this formation has a name or not, but I call it like that XD) and Takemiya came with unusual moves, Black 9 and Black 11.

Computers' Fight

Let's take a look at a game from the 10th Tengen title match game 2. The players were 2 professionals who are known for their counting skill and so were nicknamed as the "Computer". Black was Ishida "Computer" Yoshio and white was Kataoka "New Computer" Satoshi.

Girls Fight

Let's take a look at a recently played game. This game came from the 23rd Female Meijin league. Black is Okuda Aya (2 dan) and white is Suzuki Ayumi (5 dan).


Okuda Aya

In this game, Okuda Aya who played black showed an excellent game. The game became complicated early when Suzuki Ayumi played a hit shoulder at move 10. Black struggled to come out and helped her group in the center.

The game was decided when black cut white's stone at move 149. It seemed that white would win the capturing race. However, black played a tesuji with 179 to kill white. Black won the game by resignation.

Okuda Aya recently showed a very good result. She was the finalist of the 4th Daiwa Ladies Cup and notably, she beat Xie Yimin at the first round of the championship. She also started her Female Meijin league with a nice victory.

A Game To See : 2008 CCTV Cup

It's been awhile since the last A Game To See series posted. So I chose one game from 2008 CCTV Cup round 2. Black was Fan Yijing (2 dan) and white was Nie Weiping (9 dan).


Fan Yijing (left)

In this game, we can see how a slack opening will bring you into defeat. Fan played a weak opening and let white took the lead very early in the game. Also there is a beautiful squeeze in the top board during the game. I think the game is already decided even before 100 moves played.

The Road to Gosei

The first game of the 35th Gosei title match has been decided. It'll be played on June 24. This year, challenger Sakai Hideyuki will play one of the strongest Japan master, Cho U.


Sakai Hideyuki beating Yamashita Keigo at 25th Gosei final.

Many favor Cho to defend his title since Cho has more experience in title matches and has proved himself in last Kisei, Judan, and Tengen. While for Sakai, this is his first shot at one of the top 7 titles.

So far the record between those two is 2-2. All four games came from two tournaments. They are Meijin (both are from league games) and the televised blitz chmpionship, NHK Cup. Both Cho and Sakai won once in each tournament.

Igo Pro vs. Shogi Pro

A friend of mine asked me whether there is a cross tournament between shogi pros and igo pros. Well, I'm wondering what kind of tournament will it be. LOL :p

A Game to See (6)

Yamashita Keigo has been one of the top Japanese player for the past (more or less) 10 years.

In his early year, he was recognized to be "the one whose playing style is a fresh air for Japanese go." as he played bold and innovative fuseki, including mokuhazushi and takamoku combination, tengen, and go-no-go (5-5 point).

Here is one of the game example where he used his 5-5 move and won the game by an early resignation against the famous Kobayashi Koichi at game 2 of the 25th Japanese Gosei.

A Game to See (5)

This is an interesting game from 30 years ago. The game was between Takemiya Masaki (black) and Kato Masao (white)from the fourth game of the 35th Japanese Honinbo title match series.

Takemiya opened the game by playing Kato's favorite opening, high Chinese opening. Later, Takemiya attacked two white's weak groups and managed to kill one of them.

A Game to See (4)

This is an interesting game from the 14th Samsung Cup. This game is a very long game. A 361 moves game (but I think it's 362) that involves many ko fights.

White: Park Yeonghun (9 dan) from South Korea


Black: Wang Yao (6 dan) from China


Move 11 A rare move. It's more usual to play D13 or play the Mini-Chinese in the bottom
Move 24 It's easier to defend with P12.


Move 81 is the only move. No time to connect first.
Move 146 started the first important ko fight
Move 159 Nice timing! It threats white's corner and also as a ko threat.
Move 198 after 52 moves, white won the ko fight, but as a result, white's corner became threatened.



Move 205 Started the second ko fight.
Move 216 White dcided to save the corner, in return of a re fight of white group in the center.
Move 232 White defended his center group, in return of losing his bottom territory, as black saved his earlier died group.
Move 234 A nice probe. Later it turned out to be seki.
Move 236 A huge move!



The game record ended at move 361, but I think White should throw in first at R9 or S9 to create the seki.

After a long fight, Park Yeonghun (White) won the game by 0.5 point. A pitiful lose for Wang.

A Game To See (3)

Another day, another interesting game. This game came from the 62nd Japanese Honinbo league.

Black: Yamada Kimio (9 dan)
White: Kobayashi Satoru (9 dan)


White 10 The appropriate move. The ladder is unfavorable, so white must not attach at F17, since it allows black to get a strong position (10. W-F17,B-G17,W-G16,B-E17,W-F18,B-F15,W-E18,B-H16)

White 14 A strange move. Usually white play the suberi at F18. The outcome of the attachment only strenghtening black.

White 20 is an urgent move. It prevents black from creating a strong formation in the left side.



White 24 It is better to play R7 to settle the lone stone.

Black 29 is a good move. Punishing white's early mistake.

Black 39 The sequence from 32-39 is favorable for black. The position is hard for white now.

White 46 I wonder if the block at N12 is better.

Black 49 is a brave move. It's better to save the group completely by playing M13 or L12

White 56 is slow. I think it's better to leave the group and play tenuki

White 58 starts a fight, but the fight is not easy for white, due to black's thick position in the left.

White resigns at move 73. I think it's too fast to resign, perhaps white should defend with bamboo joint first at J13, then see what happen with the fight in the left.
