Weon Sungjin Won Samsung Cup

The final of the 16th Samsung Cup was a showdown between the defending champion, Gu Li (9 dan), and the never-won-a-big-international-title-before, Weon Sungjin (9 dan). The two has met before at the 2008 China-Korea Tengen. Weon won the title that time.

Weon opened the final nicely by defeating Gu Li in a 180 moves game. Gu Li resigned after his big group in the center couldn't be helped.

BC Cad Cup Preliminary's Semi-Final

The semi-final of the 3rd BC Card Cup shows a lot of amateur won over the pros and one person who already claimed a seat at the main tournament.

Round 2 starts!

It was Song Taekon (9 dan) of Korea who won the first seat at the main tournament. He beat Kim Jiin ama at the final. Interesting is, the fact that they played their final game at the same day of their semi-finals. Kim Jiin just beat Lee Qincheng (1 dan) of China while Kim Jiseok beat Kim Joonyong (5 dan) of Korea earlier that day.

With Kim Jiin going down, there are 7 amateurs left at the final, including Min Sangyoun who beat Hane Naoki of Japan and Mok Jinseok of Korea at the 15th Samsung Cup.

Seven female players made it to the final. Wang Xiangyun (2 dan) is the only non Korean between the 7. She will play Lee Taehyun (3 dan) of Korea at the Final. Lee Taehyun is a tough opponent. He is currently at the final of the 15th Chunwon where he is playing Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) in a best-of-5 title series.

There are 27 China player at the final (including Wang Xiangyun). Notably are Jiang Weijie Mingren, Gu Lingyi (5 dan), Tuo Jiaxi (3 dan), Piao Wenyao (5 dan), and Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan).

There are only 5 Japanese left at the final. They are Shuto Shun (7 dan), Oya Koichi (9 dan), Shida Tatsuya (3 dan), Ida Atsushi (2 dan), and Tsuruyama Atsushi (7 dan).

Only 2 Taiwan player made it to the final. They are Li Jinyoung (1 dan) and Lin Zhihan (9 dan).

Here are some games from the preliminary:

Cho Hanseung's Good Start

Cho Hanseung (9 dan) starting his title defense very well. He won from Weon Sungjin the challenger by resignation.

Cho Hanseung

Cho who currently hold the GS Galtex title beat Weon in 171 moves. I personally like Cho's position since the beginning. Weon currently is fighthing for 2 titles. The first is Myeongin where he is leading by 2-1 from Park Yeonghun and GS Galtex is the second title he is fighthing for.

Here is the game record:
Cho Hanseung (black) vs. Weon Sungjin (white). Result: B+R.

Lee Changho at Prices Information Final

It seems that Lee Changho won't go anywhere in Korean's baduk world in near time, despite many challenges from younger players.

Lee Changho

He proved himself once again by becoming the finalist of the 6th Prices Information Cup. Today, Lee defeated Choi Cheolhan (9 dan) to win the final's seat.

Lee who got black in the game played an interesting sequence to help his stones at the lower left. Another interesting sequence was played shortly. White invaded black's influence at move 84. Black handled the invasion well and white played a smart sacrifice to help the invasion.

Choi Cheolhan

The game ended at move 265 with Lee's 1.5 points victory.

Here is the game record:

Edit: I posted the wrong game. I posted Lee vs. Choi's game from the 2010 Korean Baduk League which was played a day before. I've fixed the game. Thank you for Haengma who pointed out this mistake. :)

At the other semi-final, Weon Sungjin will face Lee Sedol for the last final's ticket. Will it be another Lees final? Or will Weon find himself at Prices Information's final for the first time? The game
