Senior Team Won GG Auction Cup

The 5th GG Auction Cup finally reached its conclusion with Senior team came out as the winner. This year, the tournament went all the way to the 23rd game. Yoo Changhyuk who beat Kwon Hyojin repeated his success at game 22 and 23 thus gave victory to his team.

At game 22, Yoo beat Rui Naiwei in a close game and brought the tournament, for the first time, to its last game.

At game 23, Yoo once again played black, while Park Jieun played white. The opening was similiar  with game 22, but this time Park Jieun played keima instead of  ikken basami (one space low pincer). Yoo split Park's groups with black 53 and it turned out to be correct decision because later, black destroyed white's corner and got a big territory with black 83. White resigned 100 moves later.

Yoo Changhyuk Beat Kwon Hyojin

The 5th GG Auction Cup continued! Kwon Hyojin who won the previous game against Cho Hunhyun is up against another legendary player, Yoo Changhyuk (9p). Yoo is the last man standing for Male team, while the Female still has Kwon, Rui Naiwei, and Park Jieun in the line.

Kwon who played black decided to win the ko fight with black 83, allowing Yoo to split Kwon's stones. Later, the split stones couldn't help themselves, thanks to a failed attack with black 125. Kwon Hyojin resigned at move 186.

The last man standing. Can he defeat 2 more female players?.

Kwon Hyojin Broke The Streak

Cho Hunhyun went overdrive when his team needed it. Being down 2-11 against the Female team, Cho Hunhyun won 8 consecutive games to narrow down the gap. But everything has an end, and so does Cho Hunhyun's streak as he lost to Kwon Hyojin (5 dan) of Female team.

Cho Hunhyun (left) vs. Kwon Hyojin (right)

Kwon Hyojin who played black sacrificed 5 stones early in the opening to get a thick position in the center. She later attacked Cho's group with black 65 and kept on attacking until Cho's right side became a victim. Cho Hunhyun resigned at black 185. It seems that black has a combination to save her early sacrificed stone if white escaped with F5, but not helping the stone would give black enough territory to win.

Cho Hunhyun Tied The Record

When Choi Jung made the eight consecutive victories two months ago, she set a victory hard to be rivaled. However, this is not the case for Cho Hunhyun as he tied the record by beating Cho Hyeyeon (9 dan) at the 19th game.

Cho Hyeyeon (left) vs. Cho Hunhyun (right)

Cho Hyeyeon who played white tried to attack the center, but Cho Hunhyun utilized white's weakness at the top left well and launched a counter attack. Later, Cho Hunhyun used the weakness of white's shape at the right side to gained more points and sealed white's fate.

It seems that Female team is having a difficulty right now with Cho Hunhyun keeps on taking down their team members one by one. After winning 3 previous games, Cho Hunhyun won game 15 and collected his fourth victory in 5th GG Auction Cup.

Park Jiyeon (left) vs. Cho Hunhyun

Last year Park Jiyeon was one of the key player for Female team. She won 4 games in a row. Too bad she couldn't wrap things up this time.

Kim Nahyun's Second Victory

The 5th GG Auction Cup continues. The previous game's winner, Kim Nahyun, met Kim Soojang (9 dan) of Senior team.

Kim Soojang (left) vs. Kim Nahyun (right)

Kim Nahyun who got black played a rare Shusaku's kosumi in this game. She developed a territory oriented strategy, letting white took big influence. Kim Nahyun showed an excellent invading technique, starting with black 77. Black lived easily inside white's moyo. Ms. Kim went even further by allowing white to live at the lower right corner, but destroyed white's potential at the right side. Black won by resignation after 161 moves. An excellent example of how difficult playing big moyo strategy is!

Kim Nahyun got her second victory

With this loss, Senior team is down to Cho Hunhyun and Yoo Changhyuk. Both are very tough players to beat.

Short Lived Victory

An Kwangwuk who previously defeated Choi Jung couldn't stay for long in the competition as he lost to Kim Nahyun (1 dan).

Kim Nahyun (left) vs. An Kwangwuk (right)

The game was quite hard with a lot of fight. Kim who played white came under attack several times, but could dodged it precisely and won the game by 5.5 points. With this, Senior team is down to Kim Soojang, Cho Hunhyun, and Yoo Changhyuk. Will the Senior team able to narrow the gap? Or will the Female team's lead get bigger? The 11th game will be played at July 25.

Will Kim Nahyun get her second victory?

Here is the game record:

First Victory For Senior Team

Senior Team got it hard this year at the 5th edition of GG Auction Cup. Choi Jung (1 dan) of Female Team gave them blow after blow and defeated 8 of their members. But their long awaited victory finally came through An Kwangwuk (8 dan) who ended Choi Jung's winning streak.

An Kangwuk (left) vs. Choi Jung (black)

Choi who played black seemed very ambitious with her attack on white's group at the left side. An dodged it well and initiated a ko fight to threat black's 6 stones. Black won the ko, but white damaged black's territory on the right side. Choi resigned after 295 moves.

Seventh Victory

Choi Jung who previously set a new record at GG Auction Cup extended her record by defeating Seo Bongsoo (9 dan) at the seventh game.

Seo Bongsoo (left) vs. Choi Jung (right)

The focus of the game was the fighting at the center. Seo who played white split black's group with white 102 and 104. Choi found her way out with black 155-161. White can't kill black, since black has N11. If white plays N11, black will go to O9 and still alive.

Seven victories in a row! An impressive record by Ms. Choi

5th GG Auction Cup

The battle of gender heats up again with the return of GG Auction Cup in its fifth cycle. The annual championship is a battle between senior male pros and female pros. Last year the female team had an overwhelming advantage, but the senior team heated things up by slowly equalizing the advantage. However, the females kept the edge and won the championship making the standing become 2-2 to both team.

This year, Choi Jung (1 dan) was chosen to be Female team's first player while Seo Nungwuk (9 dan) was Senior team's first player. Choi got a very big advantage and won the game by 33.5 points!
