Yamashita Keigo Won Game 3

The 36th Meijin title match continued with the third game played on September 21-22. This time, Yamashita Keigo (the challenger) played black while Iyama Yuta Meijin played white.

Yamashita opened the game with Low Chinese Fuseki. Iyama answered it with F3 and Yamashita answered it with O16, an unusual move. Iyama invaded black's right side with white 32, but soon found himself in a mess. Iyama then sealed his move for white 58.

Yamashita (left) started the third game.

Day 2 continued with Iyama's sealed move revealed to be S8. Iyama tried to start a ko fight, but Yamashita avoided it and let Iyama split his groups. Yamashita played convincingly to save his groups and launched a successful counter attack.

Iyama started a ko fight with white 176 and did a mistake by playing white 178 and 180 instead of saving his group with L19. Yamashita harassed the group and Iyama resigned soon. With this victory, Yamashita is leading the seried by 2-1. The fourth game will be played on October 5-6.

Yamashita (left) took the lead from the young Meijin. Will Iyama won game 4 and equalize the score?

Here is the game record:

Yoo split Park's groups with black 53 and it turned out to be correct decision because later, black destroyed white's corner and got a big territory with black 83. White resigned 100 moves later.

Cho Insun Advanced To Round 2

Cho Insun (7 dan, amateur) made a surprise at the 39th Myeongin (Korean equivalents for Meijin) by defeating Park Jeonggeun (4p) at the first round. Of course this is not "surprising" as Cho showed really good result against professionals. He won from Yun Junsang (8p) and Seo Gunwoo (5p) at the previous preliminary round. He also reached the final of the 16th LG Cup preliminary by defeating Kuwamoto Shinpei (6p), Dang Yifei (4p), and Ding Wei (9p) before lost to Mok Jinseok (9p) at the final.

Park Jeonggeun (left) vs. Cho Insun (right)

I don't know whether the Myeongin is open to the amateur or were they invited by the sponsor/association, but it is a great thing that professional tournament is not that "strict" to amateur anymore since there are many amateurs who have the ability of pros, they just not that "lucky" to get the degree.

Iyama Even The Score

The 36th Meijin continues to game 2 at September 14-15. Yamashita Keigo won game 1 but Iyama was able to calm down and won game 2 to even the score.

Iyama who played black opened the game with a Low Chinese formation. Iyama tried to save his stones with black 19. The result looks good enough for black, but then came white 40 and 42 which created a sharp fight at the left side. Iyama ended day 1 by sealing his move for black 57.

Iyama sealed the move.

Day 2 continued with Iyama playing his sealed move, H6. Iyama aimed at white's weak group to helped his own weak group. The fight was successful for black white was forced to invade black's moyo with white 126. Yamashita's invading group soon became floating and Iyama closed the game at move 179. Yamashita resigned  because he doesn't have enough threats to win the ko fight

KPIC Went to Game 3

The 7th Korean Prices Information Cup unites Yun Junsang and Lee Younggu in the final. Game 1 was played at September 7 and was won by Yun Junsang. Yun's final move gave him a miai at A5 and A10 which would damage 1 of 2 white's groups. Lee resigned after seeing this.

Kwon Hyojin Broke The Streak

Cho Hunhyun went overdrive when his team needed it. Being down 2-11 against the Female team, Cho Hunhyun won 8 consecutive games to narrow down the gap. But everything has an end, and so does Cho Hunhyun's streak as he lost to Kwon Hyojin (5 dan) of Female team.

Cho Hunhyun (left) vs. Kwon Hyojin (right)

Kwon Hyojin who played black sacrificed 5 stones early in the opening to get a thick position in the center. She later attacked Cho's group with black 65 and kept on attacking until Cho's right side became a victim. Cho Hunhyun resigned at black 185. It seems that black has a combination to save her early sacrificed stone if white escaped with F5, but not helping the stone would give black enough territory to win.

Cho Hunhyun Tied The Record

When Choi Jung made the eight consecutive victories two months ago, she set a victory hard to be rivaled. However, this is not the case for Cho Hunhyun as he tied the record by beating Cho Hyeyeon (9 dan) at the 19th game.

Cho Hyeyeon (left) vs. Cho Hunhyun (right)

Cho Hyeyeon who played white tried to attack the center, but Cho Hunhyun utilized white's weakness at the top left well and launched a counter attack. Later, Cho Hunhyun used the weakness of white's shape at the right side to gained more points and sealed white's fate.

Yamashita Leads Meijin

Game 1 of the 36th Meijin title match finally came to the end. The challenger, Yamashita Keigo won the first game by 5.5 points and took the early lead of the series.

Yamashita Keigo (left) vs. Iyama Yuta (right)

Day 2 continued with the battle at the top board. Iyama gave up his invading stones to capture a big upper left corner. However, Iyama failed to convert more points at the upper left, thanks to his weak group at the N8. Yamashita used the weakness well and decreased Iyama's upper left potential little by little.

Will Yamashita take another big 3 title with him?

Will the young Meijin overcome the Honinbo?

The second game will be played at 14-15 September. Will Iyama close the gap, or will it even bigger?

Hane Naoki Gosei

Hane Naoki (9 dan) seems to be the new "King of Comeback" (the old one was Cho Chikun). Though he failed to win the Honinbo by comeback earlier, he didn't miss his chance to win the Gosei by winning the last 3 games after lost the first two.

Hane Naoki won game 4 by 6.5 points and won game 5 by resignation after he successfully exploited Sakai's weak groups in the opening. This is the first Gosei title for Hane. Congratulations!
