South Korea Eliminated From Huanglongshi Cup

"The 2nd Huanglongshi cup brought several surprises to the table. First, Wang Chenxing scored 7 consecutive victories. Second, Wang rewrite her winning streak from 7 to 8 as she beat Park Jieun at the 9th game. Third, as Park Jieun went down, South Korea lost all team member and eventually eliminated from the championship. Leaving only Japan and China competing for the title.

Park Jieun (left) vs. Wang Chenxing (right)

Wang Chenxing who played black made a big framework at the bottom board at the beginning of the game. Park didn't rush to attack the framework and took care the center instead. Wang made a ko fight wth black 87. Park won the ko, but Wang got to play black 107 and 109 as a compensation. Later, Park won the second ko fight, but gave black a chance to solidify the center.

Park Jieun, the last gate of team Korea

The game entered its endgame and black's position was solid enough to get through. I wonder if black 165 is better to be played at white 166 instead.

Wang Chenxing promoted to 5 dan. I think this is the same case as Song Ronghui's promotion after 7th Jeongganjang cup

Here is the game record:
Wang Chenxing (black) vs. Park Jieun (white). Result: B+2.5

Senior Team Won GG Auction Cup

The 5th GG Auction Cup finally reached its conclusion with Senior team came out as the winner. This year, the tournament went all the way to the 23rd game. Yoo Changhyuk who beat Kwon Hyojin repeated his success at game 22 and 23 thus gave victory to his team.

At game 22, Yoo beat Rui Naiwei in a close game and brought the tournament, for the first time, to its last game.

At game 23, Yoo once again played black, while Park Jieun played white. The opening was similiar  with game 22, but this time Park Jieun played keima instead of  ikken basami (one space low pincer). Yoo split Park's groups with black 53 and it turned out to be correct decision because later, black destroyed white's corner and got a big territory with black 83. White resigned 100 moves later.

Korea Won Jeongganjang

After three consecutive victories, Rui brought the tournament to its climax. It was a showdown between China's strongest team member vs. Korea's strongest team member, Park Jieun (9 dan).

Park Jieun (left) vs. Rui Naiwei (right).

The game quickly turned to a big frame game. Park who played white entered Rui's influence sphere with white 46. Rui strengthen the upper side and finally got her attacking chance with black 77 and black 87. However, Park played it cool and got out with white 144. White then played the finishing blow, white 146 and it wasn't long before black resigned.

With this victory, Korea has won the championship 4 times, while China won 3, and Japan never won the tournament before.

Happy faces of Korean team.

Top prize is 75,000,000 Won (approx. $ 67,000), and for runner up is 15,000,000 Won (approx. $ 14,000).

Prizes for players who won at least 3 consecutive times

2010 Top Ranker

It's already 2011, so we now may know who did the best in 2010. Let's take a look.

At the International stage, Heo Yeongho (8 dan) came out ahead with 23-5. Three victories ahead of Lee Sedol (9 dan) who scored 20-4. At the top 21, Korea dominates the list with 11 people, while China got 10 people. No Japanese and Taiwanese are on the list. Park Jieun is the only female on the list.Scoring 15-3 at international stage, she was placed fourth behind Kong Jie of China.

Heo Yeongho (white) vs. Tuo Jiaxi (black)
Heo Yeongho (left)

In Japan, Murakawa Daisuke (7 dan) hit the first place with 47-16. Murakawa became famous in 2010 after he won the preliminary of Samsung Cup (making him the only Japanese to do so) and became the winner of Kansai Kiin First Place beating Yuki Satoshi the title holder. The other youngster, Iyama Yuta, didn't do very well as he scored only 34-21 (62% rate). Kinda a so so performance from Iyama as last year he scored 43-14. There are 4 female players at the top 35. Suzuki Ayumi (15th, 27-16, 63%), Yoshida Mika (23th, 24-14, 63%), Xie Yimin (26th, 22-12, 65%), and Mukai Chiaki (35th, 20-18, 53%).

Murakawa Daisuke

In Korea, the back-from-break, Lee Sedol (9 dan), scored an amazing 74-14, a high 84% winning rate. It's a prove that Lee Sedol hasn't lost his touch eventhough he took a year break. Heo Yeongho is second with a huge 10 victories difference, scoring 64-20 (76% winning rate). There are 4 femlae players on the list (if I didn't miscount). Park Jieun (17th, 37-25, 60%), Park Jiyeon (21st, 34-20, 63%), Cho Hyeyeon (27th, 30-20, 60%), and Kim Yunyoung (32nd, 29-19, 60%).

Lee Sedol

Tuo Jiaxi (3 dan) became the top scorer in China. He scored 56-24 during 2010, giving him a 7 spots leap from his performance in 2009. Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan) came second on the list with 54-26. Meanwhile, Gu Li is 4th with 51-35 and Kong Jie is 6th with 45-23. I think no female player made it to the top 31 this year.

Tuo Jiaxi (right)

In Taiwan, Xiao Zhenghao (7 dan) was ranked first with 52-20, while Zhou Junxun is second with a close 51-22. Hei Jiajia (Joanne Missingham) made it to the top 20 with 18-8 score. 2010 was a wonderful year for her. I hope to see more of her in 2011.

Cho Hyeyeon Became Female Myeongin Challenger

Cho Hyeyeon who recently became the fourth female 9 dan successfully won the final game of the 12th Female Myeongin main tournament and won the right to challenge Rui Naiwei the title holder.

This is Cho's fourth consecutive challenge. She also became the challenger in three previous season, but never success.

Cho beat Park Jieun (9 dan) at the final game. Previously, Park beat Cho at the winner section semi-final, but Cho managed to stay calm and won at the final.

Cho sacrificed her stones at the bottom left to create a big framework at the center. Park broke the center moyo, but Cho's territory at the upper left corner is big enough to make her victorious.

The first game will be played at January 13. Rui has a 33-16 record in her favor against Cho.
