Sakai Leads Gosei Defense

Hane Naoki seems to be in up and down. After surviving his first kadoban, Hane who became Gosei challenger last month, lost the first game of the 36th Gosei title match.

Hane Naoki (left) vs. Sakai Hideyuki (right)

Sakai Hideyuki Gosei who played white at the first game trapped Hane's group in his influence and successfully killed it. This title is very important for Sakai. Not only he will be promoted to 9 dan if he win the title once again, it will also give him fame as he achieved little after winning the Gosei last year. The second game will be played at July 10 in Nagaoka.

5th GG Auction Cup

The battle of gender heats up again with the return of GG Auction Cup in its fifth cycle. The annual championship is a battle between senior male pros and female pros. Last year the female team had an overwhelming advantage, but the senior team heated things up by slowly equalizing the advantage. However, the females kept the edge and won the championship making the standing become 2-2 to both team.

This year, Choi Jung (1 dan) was chosen to be Female team's first player while Seo Nungwuk (9 dan) was Senior team's first player. Choi got a very big advantage and won the game by 33.5 points!

Be Back Soon

I'm sorry for not updating at all for the past week. I'm busy with my final exams and final project at the moment, so I can't get some leisure time to post. I'll post again as soon as my project finished (and I already miss some big events. Honinbo, LG). It may take 3 or 4 days. Thank you guys :)

16th LG Cup, Round 1

The first round of the 16th LG Cup started today. 32 players from 4 countries started the race to become the 16th champion of LG Cup.

The contestants

The highlight game of round 1 was the battle between Gu Li and Lee Changho both are very experienced players that once dominated the go arena, however both players are also in a slump. Lee Changho even had to play from the open qualification to reach the main stage. Maybe Lee was motivated. He played well and won the game by resignation (it was a close game though)

WBaduk Free Lecture Game

If you're a Wbaduk user, you must be aware of the free lecture. Today I played the free lecture game against Cho Mikyung (3p) of Singapore. She gave me 9 stones and 0.5 moku and I won after a fight at the upper board. I think the handicap was wrong. Maybe less stones were more appropriate. Not sure though.

Yamashita Picked Third Victory

After successfully won game 1 and game 2, Yamashita Keigo is one step closer to defend his title by winning the third game.

The third game was played at Hokkaido. Yamashita Honinbo played white in this game, while Hane Naoki challenger played black. Black quickly claimed the bottom right corner in exchange of giving white several useful stones toward the left side. Day 1 ended with Yamashita sealed the 48th move for the next day.

Yamashita Keigo handled his sealed move.

Day 2 continued with Yamashita playing K8. White chose to abandon black's approach at F17 and aimed for the center. Black quickly entered the moyo with E9 and a fight started. Black successfully alive but white got so many points at the left side from the fight. Yamashita played very well at the end game and won by 1.5 points.

Yamashita is leading the race with 3-0.

The fourth game will be played at June 15-16. Hane Naoki will face his first kadoban. Will Hane make another fight back in Honinbo title match? Let's wait and see.
