Gu Li vs. Lee Sedol

The final of the 3rd BC Card Cup is a dream final. It's a showdown between top 2 world masters, Lee Sedol (9 dan) of Korea and Gu Li (9 dan) of China.

Lee Sedol is the first person to secure the final's seat. He beat his country mate, Park Junghwan (9 dan). The opening was favorable for Park, but Lee fought well in the middle game to catch up and eventually won the game by 3.5 points.

The next day, it was a battle between China's last representative, Gu Li (9 dan), and Heo Yeongho (8 dan) of Korea. The game was already a fighting game when Gu Li invaded the right side which made his group in the center weaker, but Gu Li was ready to fight for that group. The fight was favorable for black, thanks to white 42 (which Song Taekon, the commentator, called it a mistake). One of the most interesting move is white 118 which helped Gu Li to wreck black's territory. A big exchange played with move 157-158. The trade gave Gu the advantage and Heo couldn't catch up. Heo Yeongho resigned at move 194.

Interesting is that both of the finalists have won this championship before. Lee Sedol won the 2nd edition when he beat Chang Hao by 3-0, while Gu Li won the 1st edition when he won from Cho Hanseung by 3-1.

Another new international tournament. This time, it's a bilateral tournament between China and Korea, named Zhaoshang Cup (or else named as "Merchants Property Cup"). It's a group tournament where each group consists of 6 players (5 main players + 1 substitute).

2010 Top Ranker

It's already 2011, so we now may know who did the best in 2010. Let's take a look.

At the International stage, Heo Yeongho (8 dan) came out ahead with 23-5. Three victories ahead of Lee Sedol (9 dan) who scored 20-4. At the top 21, Korea dominates the list with 11 people, while China got 10 people. No Japanese and Taiwanese are on the list. Park Jieun is the only female on the list.Scoring 15-3 at international stage, she was placed fourth behind Kong Jie of China.

In Japan, Murakawa Daisuke (7 dan) hit the first place with 47-16. Murakawa became famous in 2010 after he won the preliminary of Samsung Cup (making him the only Japanese to do so) and became the winner of Kansai Kiin First Place beating Yuki Satoshi the title holder. The other youngster, Iyama Yuta, didn't do very well as he scored only 34-21 (62% rate). Kinda a so so performance from Iyama as last year he scored 43-14. There are 4 female players at the top 35. Suzuki Ayumi (15th, 27-16, 63%), Yoshida Mika (23th, 24-14, 63%), Xie Yimin (26th, 22-12, 65%), and Mukai Chiaki (35th, 20-18, 53%).


Murakawa Daisuke

In Korea, the back-from-break, Lee Sedol (9 dan), scored an amazing 74-14, a high 84% winning rate. It's a prove that Lee Sedol hasn't lost his touch eventhough he took a year break. Heo Yeongho is second with a huge 10 victories difference, scoring 64-20 (76% winning rate). There are 4 femlae players on the list (if I didn't miscount). Park Jieun (17th, 37-25, 60%), Park Jiyeon (21st, 34-20, 63%), Cho Hyeyeon (27th, 30-20, 60%), and Kim Yunyoung (32nd, 29-19, 60%).

Tuo Jiaxi (3 dan) became the top scorer in China. He scored 56-24 during 2010, giving him a 7 spots leap from his performance in 2009. Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan) came second on the list with 54-26. Meanwhile, Gu Li is 4th with 51-35 and Kong Jie is 6th with 45-23. I think no female player made it to the top 31 this year.

In Taiwan, Xiao Zhenghao (7 dan) was ranked first with 52-20, while Zhou Junxun is second with a close 51-22. Hei Jiajia (Joanne Missingham) made it to the top 20 with 18-8 score. 2010 was a wonderful year for her. I hope to see more of her in 2011.

The 15th Samsung Cup reached its semi-final stage. Four player batlle in 3 matches series to determine who are two players that will advance to final.

15th Samsung Cup

The 15th Samsung Cup is back! Following the early prelim round last month, 32 players from China, South Korea, and Japan battled out to become the 15th Samsung Cup winner. The first round was started September 8 and the second round followed the next day.

In block A, Weon Sungjin (9 dan) from Korea won the winner bracket by defeating Qiu Jun of China and Choi Cheolhan of Korea. There is an intriguing ladder at the final game between Weon and Choi. Here is the game record:

In block B, Kim Jiseok (7 dan) of Korea emerged to be the winner. He beat Tuo Jiaxi (3 dan) and Park Jiyeon (2 dan). Meanwhile, Park Jiyeon just successfully beat Tuo Jiaxi of China at the loser section to advance to the next round. She is the only female player left now since Kim Hyeoimin lost to Tuo previously.

In block C, Han Sanghoon (5 dan) of Korea won the winner bracket after defeating Chang Hao (9 dan) and Tan Xiao (5 dan) both are from China. Lee Changho followed Han Sanghoon by taking revenge over Tan Xiao (5 dan) of China who beat him at the first round.

In block E, Park Junghwan (8 dan) barely won the final game by 0.5 point at the winner section from Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan) of China. Previously he beat his country mate, Park Jinsol (4 dan). At the loser section, Zhou Ruiyang won the final game from Park Jinseol thus advanced to the next round.
