Cho Hyeyeon Became Female Myeongin Challenger

Cho Hyeyeon who recently became the fourth female 9 dan successfully won the final game of the 12th Female Myeongin main tournament and won the right to challenge Rui Naiwei the title holder.

This is Cho's fourth consecutive challenge. She also became the challenger in three previous season, but never success.

Cho beat Park Jieun (9 dan) at the final game. Previously, Park beat Cho at the winner section semi-final, but Cho managed to stay calm and won at the final.

Cho sacrificed her stones at the bottom left to create a big framework at the center. Park broke the center moyo, but Cho's territory at the upper left corner is big enough to make her victorious.

The first game will be played at January 13. Rui has a 33-16 record in her favor against Cho.

The Fourth Female 9 dan

Cho Hyeyeon is officially the fourth female player to receive 9 dan diploma (as of 21 December 2010). She followed the step of Feng Yun, Rui Naiwei, and Park Jieun to achieve this level.

Cho Hyeyeon (9 dan)

I'm still looking for the reason why she got the promotion. I'll post here if I get yhe answer (if you know the answer, please tell me :D)

Edit: It seems she got the promotion due to the success of South Korea's female team winning gold medal at the Asian Games. She along with Lee Minjin and Kim Yunyoung got the promotion. Lee Minjin was promoted to 6 dan while Kim Yunyoung to 3 dan.

Also, she celebrated her promotion by beating Lee Sedol (9 dan) in GS Galtex preliminary.

Congratulations Ms. Hyeyeon!

Here is the game record:
Cho Hyeyeon (black) vs. Lee Sedol (white). Result: B+R.

Let's do some brain exercise in this beautiful Saturday. Black just played at A (which is a mistake). White to play and make use his marked group. Enjoy.

Jiang Weijie the New Mingren

Jiang Weijie (5 dan) successfully laid his final blow at Gu Li Mingren. After a hard 5 games, Jiang Weijie became the new Mingren.

Game 3 started at November 29. Jiang Weijie managed to extend his victory from game 2 and led the series by 2-1. Gu Li found himself in a hard spot after Jiang Weijie cut his group with 89 by breaking the "rule" of "never cut two iken tobi stones". Jiang then put more pressure at Gu Li's group. Gu Li resigned at move 215. He was about 6 points behind (including komi).

At the fourth game, Gu Li showed what he was made of. Gu Li showed a new plan (at least for me) up to move 28. Gu started his attack by playing the attachment at move 109. Jiang must have confidence when he played W114. However, Gu played it right and successfully trapped the group. Gu's position became very thick and he launched his second attack at white's weak group at the left side. Jiang resigned at move 219 because his group at the left side was helpless.

Tsumego Answer

This is the answer for Refreshing Tsumego.

L19 looks natural here, but it doesn't work due to cut at Q18.

Other answer like G19 doesn't work as well.

Here M19 is the correct answer.

Black can try to block from the other side, but it doesn't work.

Refreshing Tsumego

I haven't got the chance to post as usual due to my assignments and tests. It's 11 pm and I'm still working at my Data Mining, but it's always fun to do little tsumego during such time (well, kinda finding a reason to slack off :D)

Black just played at A because he thinks that his "B" group has alive. It's white to move and kill black. Enjoy :)

Yuki Satoshi Leads Tengen

Yuki Satoshi (9 dan) the strongest player of Kansai Kiin who just lost his First Place title to Murakawa Daisuke got a very nice compensation in another tournament. He won the second game of 36th Tengen championsip, thus leading by 2-0 from title holder Yamashita Keigo.

Yamashita seems wanted to play for influence. You can tell it by looking t the opening choice. However, Yuki played very well to disturb the strategy. In the end Yamashita fail to convert hs moyo into territory. Yuki Satoshi won the game by 2.5 points. The third game will be played at November 16.

Rin Kanketsu's First League

Rin Kanketsu (7 dan) must be very happy the day he beat O Meien at the final of the last preliminary at the 36th Meijin Championship.

This will be the first league for Rin Kanketsu. I think this is pretty good for him, considering that he is relatively young (he is 26 now). Good Luck for Rin Kanketsu.

Rin Kanketsu

Also notable, this is Yamashita's return to the league since he was demoted at 2006. Hane Naoki also make a comeback to the league. The last time he was in the league was in 2001 when he held Tengen title.

Here are the players who will play at the 2011 Meijin League:

2. Cho U
3. Yuki Satoshi
4. Sakai Hideuki
5. Mizokami Tomochika
6. Cho Chikun

Cho Hanseung (9 dan) starting his title defense very well. He won from Weon Sungjin the challenger by resignation.

Cho Hanseung

Cho who currently hold the GS Galtex title beat Weon in 171 moves. I personally like Cho's position since the beginning. Weon currently is fighthing for 2 titles. The first is Myeongin where he is leading by 2-1 from Park Yeonghun and GS Galtex is the second title he is fighthing for.
