Round 3 Result: Japan Is Still Unbeatable

Round 3 of the SportAccord World Mind Games Championship saw many crucial matches. The China-Korea match was a match for the gold as both teams were strong candidates for the gold medal. The other match were between USA and Europe to determine who will avoid the last place. The game between Japan and Taiwan is also crucial as the winner will save at least the bronze medal in this championship.

Yamashita Keigo faced Chen Shiyuan at the first board. Chen actually had the ball to win, but Yamashita kept on pushing and finally turned the tide and score one point for Japan.

The fifth board was the battle between two ladies. Mukai Chiaki took on Hei Jiajia's challenge in a big moyo game. Hei Jiajia lost out the opening a little bit so she tried to control the upper side. Mukai Chiaki calmly responded to this plan and Jiajia had to sacrifice her lower right group to capture the upper side. However, it wasn't enough and she resigned at move 183.

Vanessa Wong who adapted the weather better than she did in the first round, still couldn't give a serious challenge to Mukai Chiaki. Mukai once again played a chase and kill game but this time, she was the hunter. Vanessa resigned after his big group in the center didn't get the chance to live.

Round 1 Result: Japan Got Perfect Score

China was not the only country to get a perfect score at the first round of 2011 SportAccord World Mind Championship. Japan who took on U.S.A also got a perfect 5-0 and made a good start at the tournament.

The first board was a clash between Yamashita Keigo Honinbo Meijin and Jiang Mingjiu (7 pro). Yamashita played really well and after an acrobatic play, he killed white's group at the bottom left.

Iyama Survived First Kadoban

The 36th Meijin reached its fifth game on October 13. Yamashita Keigo, the challenger, was leading the series by 3-1. One more victory and Yamashita will be the new Meijin. At the fifth game, Yamashita played black while Iyama Yuta Meijin played white.
                                         Iyama handled his fujite.

The game quickly entered a fighting position when Iyama attacked black's formation on the left side. The attack gave white a potential area at the bottom of the board, while black got a strong thickness at the right side. Day 1 ended with Iyama Yuta sealed his move for white 64.

Day 2 continued with Iyama playing on the right side. Yamashita countered it by attacking white's position at the bottom. Yamashita successfully invade white's area and switched to the right side, attacking white's stones. Iyama showed a good surviving skill and survived black's attack. Yamashita resigned after Iyama played white 182. With the victory, Iyama closed the gap by 1 point. Yamashita is still leading the series by 3-2 and Iyama is still under a must win situation at the next game if he wants to defend his title. The sixth game will be played on October 27-28.

Iyama survived the fifth game.

Will Yamashita capture the title at the next game? Or will it go all the way to the seventh game?

Here is the game record:

Iyama sealed the move.

Day 2 continued with Iyama playing his sealed move, H6. Iyama aimed at white's weak group to helped his own weak group. Yamashita Leads Meijin

Game 1 of the 36th Meijin title match finally came to the end. The challenger, Yamashita Keigo won the first game by 5.5 points and took the early lead of the series.

Yamashita Keigo (left) vs. Iyama Yuta (right)

Day 2 continued with the battle at the top board. Iyama gave up his invading stones to capture a big upper left corner. However, Iyama failed to convert more points at the upper left, thanks to his weak group at the N8. Yamashita used the weakness well and decreased Iyama's upper left potential little by little.

Will Yamashita take another big 3 title with him?

Will the young Meijin overcome the Honinbo?

The second game will be played at 14-15 September. Will Iyama close the gap, or will it even bigger?
