Round 1 Result: China's Clear Swept

The first round of the 2011 SportAccord World Mind Championship was played at the same day of the opening. The first round was played at 12.30 and the clash between 6 teams started! 


China took on Europe at the first round and made a clear 5-0 swept!


Kong Jie beat Catalin Taranu in 137 moves. Catalin couldn't handle black 125 and his group soon met its end.

Gu Li vs Christian Pop is another short game finish. Gu Li beat the Romanian player just in 118 moves. Gu demonstrated his strong attacking style in this game.

Cornel Burzo who played at the third board for Europe also couldn't last long against Xie He of China. Cornel resigned after 117 moves, after Xie cut his group at the upper board.

Piao Wenyao was not as lucky as his previous 3 team mates as Jan Simara challenged him in a big territory contest and was the closest (and when I say closest, it's actually still far but was better than his team mates) to beat China's member. However, Piao stood his ground and won by 6.5 points.

The game between Li He and Vanessa Wong was one of the first to finish. Li quickly deliver the K.O punch to the 16 y.o Vanessa and Vanessa bowed down after 79 moves. Ms. Wong seemed to be too eager to attack black at the left side and the result was a disaster for her.

SportAccord World Mind Championship Starts!

The SportAccord World Mind Championship started at December 9. The multinational tournament is held to celebrate the mind games. I'm not talking about the kind of game your partner (wife, husband, gf, bf) often plays to you, but I'm talking about bridge, chess, draughts, xiangqi, and our favorite game of course, go.

SAWMC starts!

In the go section, 6 countries (actually 4 countries and 2 continents) will play in two categories, mixed team and mixed pair. The mixed team consists of 4 male players and 1 female while the mixed pair is the usual mixed rengo with 1 male and 1 female play for each team.

I don't know why, but it seems that Japan doesn't go all out this time. Yamashita Keigo and Mukai Chiaki are solid choice, but the other 3 doesn't really sound for me in international event. China and Korea play their best players (though I prefer Park Jieun or Cho Hyeyeon over Kim Hyeoyimin), while Taiwan sets the youngest age average (22 y.o average). Japan and USA are the oldest team (both with 39 y.o average).

The event looks interesting and I'm looking forward for any surprises during the events :D

Weon Sungjin Won Samsung Cup

The final of the 16th Samsung Cup was a showdown between the defending champion, Gu Li (9 dan), and the never-won-a-big-international-title-before, Weon Sungjin (9 dan). The two has met before at the 2008 China-Korea Tengen. Weon won the title that time.

Weon opened the final nicely by defeating Gu Li in a 180 moves game. Gu Li resigned after his big group in the center couldn't be helped.

Jiang Weijie Defended Mingren

Jiang Weijie (5 dan) finally could breath in relieve again, after he defended his title from one of the top Chinese player, Kong Jie 9 dan).

Jiang opened the series with 2 victories and it looked like that he would defend his title easily, but Kong proved himself to be a tough opponent. Kong won the next 2 games and brought the series to its fifth game.

Cho U (Kisei) finally closed the Oza title series with his victory over Challenger, Hane Naoki, at the third game. Cho defended his title with a clear swept. 3-0!

This is the 4th consecutive Oza title for Cho and his 7th overall. If Cho can defend his title once more, he will be a Honorary Oza.
