Jiang Weijie Defended Mingren

Jiang Weijie (5 dan) finally could breath in relieve again, after he defended his title from one of the top Chinese player, Kong Jie 9 dan).

Jiang opened the series with 2 victories and it looked like that he would defend his title easily, but Kong proved himself to be a tough opponent. Kong won the next 2 games and brought the series to its fifth game.

Here is the game records:

One Victory To Mingren

The 24th Mingren title series is a showdown between Jiang Weijie Mingren and Kong Jie, the challenger. Last year, Jiang ended Gu Li's 6 years of Reign on Mingren title. This year, he is close to defend his title after winning the first two games from Kong.

The first game was played on October 21. Jiang played black against Kong. Jiang showed an interesting combination starting with black 111-117, trapping white's group at the bottom of the board. Kong resigned after black 209. He is behind about 5 points on board.

The second game was played 3 days later with colors reversed. Jiang played white while Kong played black. Black 13 is rather new to my eyes, as the usual answer is the kosumi tsuke at P4. The game was interesting and full of fighting. Kong resigned after 244 moves.

Jiang Weijie the New Mingren

Jiang Weijie (5 dan) successfully laid his final blow at Gu Li Mingren. After a hard 5 games, Jiang Weijie became the new Mingren.

Game 3 started at November 29. Jiang Weijie managed to extend his victory from game 2 and led the series by 2-1. Gu Li found himself in a hard spot after Jiang Weijie cut his group with 89 by breaking the "rule" of "never cut two iken tobi stones". Jiang then put more pressure at Gu Li's group. Gu Li resigned at move 215. He was about 6 points behind (including komi).

At the fourth game, Gu Li showed what he was made of. Gu Li showed a new plan (at least for me) up to move 28. Gu started his attack by playing the attachment at move 109. Jiang must have confidence when he played W114. However, Gu played it right and successfully trapped the group. Gu's position became very thick and he launched his second attack at white's weak group at the left side. Jiang resigned at move 219 because his group at the left side was helpless.

However he got a group to watch for at the center. Jiang managed to capture black's weak group at the center and later found a nice move (move 174) that wrecked black's territory.

Li Zhe or Jiang Weijie?

Gu Li must wait a little longer to know who will face him at the 23rd Mingren title match series as Li Zhe managed to win second game today by a bare 0.5 point.

Jiang Weijie Won Game 1

The 23rd Chinese Mingren Cup is in its last stage before the title match. Two players, Jiang Weijie (5 dan) and Li Zhe (6 dan), brawl to determine who will challenge Gu Li in a 5 games title match.

Jiang Weijie (left) vs. Li Zhe (right)

Jiang Weijie took the first game by resignation. White played a hane at move 134 and eventually killed black's group. I personally think black should nobi at move 131.

Here is the game record Jiang Weijie (white) vs. Li Zhe (black). Result: W+R.

Gu Lingyi to Challenge Gu Li for Mingren Title

This year, Gu Li, the Mingren title holder, will be challenged by 20 years old Chinese promising young player, Gu Lingyi.

Gu Lingyi is Chinese 5-dan professional. Born at July 3, 1991. He is the winner of South-West Qiwang championship for three consecutive years, from 2007 to 2009. An interesting fact is that he beat Gu Li in the final of the 8th South-West Qiwang (2009) to won the championship.

Gu Lingyi

Gu Li is the famous Chinese player. Many consider him as number 1 player in the world. He hold 5 international title in 2009 after he won the 1st BCCard Cup. He is well known among go fans for his aggressive playing style. Gu Li has been the title holder of Mingren for 5 years. Starting from 2004 when he stole it from Qiu Jun. Last year many expected Piao Wenyao (5 dan) to won the title from him, after Piao won the first 2 games, but Gu Li fought back and won the last three games.

Gu Li

Mingren is the Chinese Meijin title (it shares the same letters). First held was in 1988. Ma Xiaochun is famous for this title since he is the title holder for 13 consecutive years.

The first game's date is yet unknown, but I think it will be at the end of November or in early December.
