Chang Hao and Gu Li Were Not Seeded

It seems that both Chang Hao and Gu Li are on their edge. Due to their poor results at international event, both senior players, Gu Li and Chang Hao were not seeded as China's team players at 2010 Nongshim Cup. Instead, they seed the rising Kong Jie and Xie He who gave China 5 consecutive victories at the previous Nongshim edition.

Gu Li

Gu Li entered the preliminary tournament, but lost at the second round to Zhou Ruiyang (5 dan). However, he still has the chance, since he will play at the loser section. His first game at the loser section will be against Piao Wenyao (5 dan). Meanwhile, Chang Hao has lost the preliminary tournament. He lost to Hu Yaoyu (8 dan) at the first round, then lost to Ding Wei (9 dan) at the loser section.

Korea Stole the Title from China Again!

It was settled! Korea is the champion of the 11th Nongshim Cup!

It must be very disappointing for China, since they were doing very well, yet they can't win the title.

Lee Changho

Let's review the tournament from the first stage. Kim Jiseok of Korea was the star of the first round. He won the first three games (thus winning the consecutive prize money), before losing to Xie He of China in the fourth game.

When the tournament was continued in January, the spot light went to Xie He who won 4 consecutive games before losing to Japan's Honinbo, Hane Naoki. Hane Naoki then closed the second stage by beating Park Yeonghun in the tenth game.

The third stage was started at March 9. Liu Xing of China helped China team to strengthen their grip on the tournament. However, Lee Changho played all out and won the last three games from Liu Xing, Gu Li, and Chang Hao. It was such a drama this year!

I can understand how disappointed China team is.

Why I said again in the title? Because the same thing also happened in the Jeongganjang Cup. When the third stage started at Jeongganjang Cup, China still has three members, while Japan and Korea only had one each. However, Park Jieun won all 4 games, thus winning the championship for Korea.

Signing an autograph. I want one too. Hehehehehe.

I must say that the two tournaments were very interesting this year.

China or Korea

The 11th Nongshim Cup is down to the climax part! Only two countries left with only one player representing each.

The 14th game is down to China's captain, Chang Hao vs. Korea's captain, Lee Changho.

The third stage was started in March 9. The first game was between Hane Naoki from Japan and Liu Xing of China. Hane lost the game by 5.5 points, thus eliminating Japan's hope to win the tournament, as their last player was eliminated.

The next day, the last player of Korea, Lee Changho played Liu Xing. China was on the advantage side, since they still had three players. Liu Xing, Gu Li, and Chang Hao. If Liu won this game, China will once again triumph in this championship.

However, Lee pulled quite a game and saved Korea from losing by beating Liu Xing by resignation.

The next player from China was the grand slam, Gu Li. It was interesting to wonder the outcome, since Gu Li's playing style is very aggressive, while Lee's is calm (though he seems to change a little nowadays).

Lee Changho once again played very well and won the game by resignation.

Today, the last game is played. Who will be the winner? China or Korea?

11th Nongshim Cup

The 11th Nongshim Cup is scheduled to be started at the end of November. Starting from November 25, three groups, from China, Japan, and Korea will fight each other to win this championship.

Nongshim Cup is a tournament with win and continue format. The same format with Jeongganjang Cup. The tournament is divided into 3 stages, with stage 1 to be played from Nocember 25 to November 28.

Each team consists of 5 players. Here is the list of the team members:
China:
Chang Hao(9d), Ding Wei(9d), Gu Li(9d), Xie He(7d), Liu Xing(7d)

Japan:
Hane Naoki(9d), Takao Shinji(9d), Yamashita Keigo(9d), Yamada Kimio(9d), Iyama Yuta(9d)

Korea:
Lee Changho(9d), Park Yeonghun(9d), Yun Junsang(7d), Kim Jiseok(6d), Kim Seongjae(3d)

The Japan team doesn't change very much. Kono Rin is changed with Iyama Yuta. The rest is exactly the same member as last year's. I personally prefer to put Yoda Norimoto instead of Yamada Kimio, but.. oh well.
China team still seed Chang Hao and Gu Li, while the other three members were chosen through preliminaries.
Korea team is the one with the most changes. With Lee Sedol' temporary retirement, only Lee Changho seeded as the team member (and as the captain I believe), while the other 4 were chosen through preliminaries.

Nongshim is an instant noodle company. I've tried their product once and I think it was pretty delicious, but it's very expensive here, since it is imported.

Korea Won Nongshim Cup

The 10th Nongshim Cup has end.

In the last game, Lee Sedol from Korea beat Gu Li from China.

Lee played white in this game and Gu Li took black. The game was a fighting game since the beginning. A capturing race started at move 23, when black tried to attack white's weak group. Lee managed to alive after he cut black's group with move 80.
Board condition up to move 80

It's Lee's turn to attack with move 146, after he successfully invaded black's moyo and put one of black's group in danger. Black's combination from move 143-148 was amazing. Black created threat to alive and at the same time created a ko fight in the corner, which he won it.

After a long battle, white won the game by 3.5 points.
Gu Li (left) vs. Lee Sedol (right)

With this, Korea has won 8 out of 10 times, while China and Japan both has won this tournament once.

China Down To Last Player

After a won from Takao Shinji, Chang Hao from China was defeated by Korea's #1 player, Lee Sedol.

This time, Chang Hao played as white and Lee Sedol played as black.
Chang Hao (left) vs. Lee Sedol (right)

My first question of the game came from Chang Hao's move at move 20, which is disadvantageous due to black's advantageous ladder. Perhaps Chang Hao wanted to play a threatening ladder breaker move later, but didn't get the opportunity to.
Game progress is up to move 75

The battle began after Lee played move 27. The battle in the right side is difficult for both side, but in the end, Chang Hao able to save the big group, however I think the game is still better for Lee, since he gained some thickness to the center.

The second fight started at move 100, when Chang Hao, again, try to survive inside Lee Sedol's moyo. In the end. Chang Hao able to connect the group to his upper right corner, but Lee took sente in exchange.

Chang Hao resigned in move 169, after he failed to kill Lee's group in the left side.

With this, China is down to Gu Li, while Korea still have the two Lee.

Japan Lost Nongshim Cup

The third stage of 10th Nongshim Cup was started February 17.

Japan's last player, the current Judan title holder, Takao Shinji lost to China's captain, Chang Hao.

Takao Shinji (left) vs. Chang Hao (right)

Taking white, Takao Shinji resigned at move 207. I think the gap is about 15 points on the board.

The game's progress is up to move 72

The opening is quite unique. White 18 is a modern and rare answer to the 2 spaces high pincer.
Chang Hao's answer at move 25 is a new answer (which I personally think is not a good answer). Usually black will answer at K4 instead of N2. However, I think the opening is slightly better for black.

The three captains. From left to right: Takao Shinji, Lee Changho, Chang Hao. As usual, Lee doesn't smile :)

With this lost, Japan's eliminated from the cup. Next is Chang Hao vs. Lee Sedol.

Takao Shinji Closed the Second Stage

After won for five concecutive times in the 10th Nongshim Cup, Kang Dongyun from Korea was stopped by Takao Shinji, Judan from Japan.

Takao Shinji, Judan

Playing white for the first time, Kang Dongyun resigned after 165 moves.

the sequence from 23-28 is interesting. White didn't really try to attack black's two stones and black got a good shape and sente.

Takao Shinji (B) vs. kang Dongyun (W), up to move 63

Many people didn't expect Takao Shinji to won this match actually, but perhaps Kang Dongyun was exhausted to play so many games concecutively.

This win is very important for Japan. At least they got one win in this 10th tournament. They haven't won even a single match before.

But it seems pretty hard for Japan to win this year, with only Takao Shinji left, while China still has Chang Hao and Gu Li, while Korea still has Lee Sedol and Lee Changho, the iron gate of this tournament.

Kang Dongyun's Fifth Concecutive Victories

After succeed in the four previous matches, Kang Dongyun from Korea lengthened his winning streak with beating Qiu jun 8d from China who won Liquang Cup and Chang-qi this year.

Taking black for the fifth time, Kang won the game by resignation.

I think the opening was better for Kang, since he got turtle shell in the middle and got 2 corners.

Kang Dongyun (B) vs. Qiu Jun (W), up to move 55

Qiu Jun resigned after 223 moves

Tuo Jiaxi Stopped! Kang Dongyun Rocks the Second Stage

The second stage of Nongshim Cup had started. In the first stage, teenager Tuo Jiaxi from China met Kang Dongyun 9p from Korea. Tuo Started very well for China in the first stage with beating 4 players, but unfortunately he can't do the same in the second round.

Kang Dongyun, 9p

In the first round, Kang Dongyun from Korea who won the gold medal in the 1st WMSG defeated Tuo Jiaxi from China by 1.5 points. I think Kang Dongyun won the game during the endstage. His peep at move 163 eliminated white's potential in the upper side. After 303 moves, black won by 1.5 points

Tuo Jiaxi (W) vs. Kang Dongyun (B), up to move 61

In the second round, Kang Dongyun met "King of cool" Yamada Kimio from Japan. Taking black, Kang played the same opening as his previous game. I think Yamada Kimio's opening is somewhat slow. He tried to gain moyo in the left side, but failed, and then he tried to control the center, but failed again. After 157 moves, Yamada Kimio resigned. The territories gap was too big.

Yamada Kimio (W) vs. Kang Dongyun (B), up to move 58

In the third round, Kang Dongyun played Piao Wenyao from China. A ko fight was started in the right side at move 74, as Kang tried to gain some advantages in the right side. After 283 moves, black won by 2.5 points. White was only able to control the upper board, but it's not enough to chased black's territory.

Piao Wenyao (W) vs. Kang Dongyun (B) up to move 63

In the fourth round, Kang Dongyun met the current Honinbo title holder, Hane Naoki. The game was interesting. Playing as white, Hane Naoki played an opening to created moyo in the bottom board. When Kang invaded with move 25, Hane chased the group, but black made it to live with move 81. Hane Naoki resigned at move 199, I think black led around 12 points on the board.
Hane Naoki (W) vs. Kang Dongyun (B), up to move 63

With this, Japan down to their last player, Takao Shinji. I think the task is too hard for Takao sensei to win this cup for Japan. Korea and China each has 3 players. The second stage is not end yet. Kang Dongyun met Qiu Jun from China next.

The 2009 Nongshim Cup Starts!

The 2009 Nongshim Cup has been started. Three teams from three country,China, Japan, and South Korea, will compete each other in a knockout team tournament.

So far, 4 games has been played. All won by Chinese 3dan, Tuo Jiaxi.

Tuo beat Heo Yeongho,6dan in the first round by resignation.
Heo Yeongho (white) vs. Tuo Jiaxi (black)

In the second round, he beat Yamashita Keigo by 4.5 points.
Tuo Jiaxi (B) vs. Yamashita Keigo (W), B+4.5

Yun Junsang from Korea lost to him in the third round by 4.5 points.

He beat Japanese Tengen title holder, Kono Rin in the fourth round by 4.5 points.

China really has a good start, but it doesn't mean that they will surely win this year. The cup is still running.
