Chen Yaoye Defended Tianyuan

Chen Yaoye, the 2 times Tianyuan winner, seems to be in a great condition. He beat Zhou Hexi, the challenger, at the second game of the 25th Tianyuan thus defended his title for the second time.

Chen Yaoye Won Game 1 of 25th Tianyuan

Chen Yaoye was the one who ended Gu Li's six years Tianyuan title streak in 2009. Since then, Chen has defended the title once in 2010 from Gu Li (who became challenger). This year, Chen found himself head-to-head against the young rising star, Zhou Hexi (4 dan).

Chen who has more experience seize the game with black 193 which led white to a nasty ko fight which Chen used very well. Zhou resigned at move 259.

Here is the game record:

Korea Won China-Korea Tengen

The annual bilateral Tengen championship is back. This year, Park Junghwan Chunwon (Korean for Tengen) meet Chen Yaoye Tianyuan (Chinese for Tengen). This tournament is sponsored by Sports Korea newspaper and Xinmin Wanbo evening paper.

Chen Yaoye of China opened the first game by an early 165 moves resignation game. Chen who played black in the first game ended the game by cutting Park's group. The cut will lead to a favorable ko fight for black. I'm not sure whether white group can survive here or not, but perhaps Park didn't think he'll win the fight, so he resigned.

Here is the first game's record:

Park Junghwan even the game by winning the second game by 2.5 points. The game was quite territory oriented. Black claimed the right side, while white went for the left side and aimed for the upper board. There was a big trade at move 205. White sacrificed his 7 stones (about 12 points) for black's 5 stones. The trade was even I think. However, black eventually came out ahead after the trade.

The final third game was played since this morning. Park played as black again and repeat his previous victory. The game was, again, territory oriented. After the final ko fight, black won the game by 1.5 points.

Chen Yaoye Defended Tianyuan

Chen Yaoye (Tianyuan) successfully defended his title from challenger Gu Li. He won the third game with white stone by resignation. An interesting similarity between Tianyuan (which means Tengen) with the last Tengen title match is the fact that all games were won by one color. In Tengen, Black won all the game by resignation, while in Tianyuan, it is white who won all the game by resignation.

The second game was played at April 22. Gu Li who played black chose to play territorially in the opening.

Move 27 is rare. Usually black play at D14. Black tried to save his stone at move 84, though it turned out to be problematic for him. Chen separated the group and attacked black's weak group strongly. He even sacrificed his group in the left side (C11 group) and a group of 14 stones to kill black's weak group! An excellent game by white.
