The third game was played on April 5. Cho U faced a must win situation as he was behind by 0-2. If he lost the third game, his chance to claim Judan would be 0. Fortunately, he won this game and the match went to its 4th game. Cho got a nice attacking game this time. He threw 11 stones away at the upper left corner to capture Iyama's group at the center. Cho solidified his center and Iyama resigned soon afterward.

Iyama Yuta the 67th Honinbo's Challenger

Honinbo is 1 of the top 3 Japanese title. It has a long history and could be dated back in Edo period. After it became an annual tournament, 16 people already claimed this title. This year, Iyama Yuta got his first shot to be the 17th people to hold the annual Honinbo.

Iyama won the Honinbo league in his 3rd try. In the previous 2 leagues, he scored 4-3 and 6-1 and stayed at the second position. This year he scored 6-1 again but the circumstance is difference as he collected most win and doesn't have to play a tiebreak game.

Iyama won the last game against Hane Naoki and avoided a possible tie result with Yuki Satoshi. This victory gave Iyama his 5th major title challenger's right. Oza and Gosei are the only tournament where he never become challenger.

Iyama Yuta Leads Judan

The Judan title celebrates its 50th year of running this year with 2 top Japanese players battle for the title. Iyama Yuta Judan will play a best-of-5 series against Cho U, the challenger.

The first game was played on March 1 at Higashiosaka, Osaka (the same place as the first match of the 24th Female Meijin). Iyama played white while Cho played black.

Cho U (left) vs. Iyama Yuta (right)

The opening was unusual The combination of black 7 and 9 is a new for me. The result was a corner for white and influence for black. Iyama made a good use for his stones' aji with white 68. White made a seki and grabbed a big territories at the upper board. Iyama continued to give a brilliant attack, starting with white 144. White trapped black's group at the center and killed it.

Here is the game record:

Iyama Won Tengen

The 37th Tengen tournament reached its end at the third game on November 17. Iyama Yuta (9 dan) won the third game from Yuki Satoshi, the title holder, thus winning the title by 3-0!

Iyama Yuta (left) vs. Yuki Satoshi (right)
This is the first Tengen title for Iyama and it seems he is now the youngest Tengen title holder at the age of 22. Previously the record was held by Ryu Shikun. Ryu Shikun was 23 when he won the title.

Iyama Yuta, the youngest Tengen
Congratulations for Iyama!

Iyama Won Second Game by A Half Point

The second game of the 37th Tengen sen met with a close game. Iyama Yuta who played won the game by 0.5 point, giving him the lead of the title series by 2-0!

Iyama Yuta (left) vs. Yuki Satoshi (right)
Iyama showed an interesting play with black 77 to black 89. He used the aji of his stone to create a thickness. Yuki Satoshi played a clever reducing move with white 120 and 122, resulting in a close game for both players.  I think white 242 is the losing move. White should play at A2 instead, it seems that white will win by 0.5 point that way.

Will Iyama win Tengen as a redemption on his Meijin's lost?
The third game will be played on November 17. Will Iyama win he title at the next game, or will Yuki survived the series? The third game will be crucial. Don't miss it guys!

Here is the game record:
Iyama Yuta (black) vs. Yuki Satoshi (white). Result: B+0.5

Iyama Survived First Kadoban

The 36th Meijin reached its fifth game on October 13. Yamashita Keigo, the challenger, was leading the series by 3-1. One more victory and Yamashita will be the new Meijin. At the fifth game, Yamashita played black while Iyama Yuta Meijin played white.
                                         Iyama handled his fujite.

The game quickly entered a fighting position when Iyama attacked black's formation on the left side. The attack gave white a potential area at the bottom of the board, while black got a strong thickness at the right side. Day 1 ended with Iyama Yuta sealed his move for white 64.

Day 2 continued with Iyama playing on the right side. Yamashita countered it by attacking white's position at the bottom. Yamashita successfully invade white's area and switched to the right side, attacking white's stones. Iyama showed a good surviving skill and survived black's attack. Yamashita resigned after Iyama played white 182. With the victory, Iyama closed the gap by 1 point. Yamashita is still leading the series by 3-2 and Iyama is still under a must win situation at the next game if he wants to defend his title. The sixth game will be played on October 27-28.

Iyama survived the fifth game.

Will Yamashita capture the title at the next game? Or will it go all the way to the seventh game?

Yamashita Leads Meijin

Game 1 of the 36th Meijin title match finally came to the end. The challenger, Yamashita Keigo won the first game by 5.5 points and took the early lead of the series.

Yamashita Keigo (left) vs. Iyama Yuta (right)

Day 2 continued with the battle at the top board. Iyama gave up his invading stones to capture a big upper left corner. However, Iyama failed to convert more points at the upper left, thanks to his weak group at the N8. Yamashita used the weakness well and decreased Iyama's upper left potential little by little.

Will Yamashita take another big 3 title with him?

Will the young Meijin overcome the Honinbo?

The second game will be played at 14-15 September. Will Iyama close the gap, or will it even bigger?
